Broadening our Scope:  Psychoanalytic Insights for Transforming Malignant Cultural Attitudes

In response to Professor Albert Einstein’s question regarding what can psychoanalysis contribute to eradicate war and its root causes from human civilization, Freud spoke of “the need to transform the cultural attitudes” of individuals and groups. For us to do so, we need a clearer conception of culture and the mind than the one Freud supplied.  This presentation attempts to synthesize the cultural anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on culture or habitus with Freud’s ideas on culture, the “third” unconscious, and the ego to suggest a conception of culture that is compatible with psychoanalytic discoveries and models of the mind. Dr. Dajani will then explore how psychoanalytic propositions can “transform the cultural attitudes” of polarized individuals and communities.
