Workshops

A.    Session 1: “Anchor Tasks for the US Classroom”

Duration: 2 hours     Presenter: Hoover Herrera, US Singapore Math® Expert

Synopsis: Singapore textbooks are written with the main learning task being an Anchor Task. An Anchor task is the single task used over a prolonged period of instructional time. It embodies the idea of  “Teach Less, Learn More”, a philosophy of the Singapore education system.  In this hands-on session, through examples from Singapore Math® textbooks, participants will learn about what are Anchor Tasks, how to identify problems that lend themselves to become Anchor Tasks, and how to teach mathematics through Anchor Tasks.

B.    Session 2: “Teaching of Fractions in Primary”

Duration: 2 hours     Presenters: Chris Coyne & Hoover Herrera, US Singapore Math® Experts

Synopsis- In this hands-on session, participants will learn about the concepts of fractions as equal parts, fraction notation and equivalent fractions. Also discussed are fractions as a whole,  part of a set and part of a number.  Through the use of manipulatives, participants will learn how to teach the four basic operations including mental strategies.

C.    Session 3: “Problem Solving Using Bar Models”

Duration: 2 hours     Presenter: Chris Coyne, US Singapore Math® Expert

Synopsis: In this session, participants will solve selected problems by using the bar model technique.  Through a series of problems with varying degrees of difficulty, participants will learn how to use a bar model to solve part-whole, comparison and fraction word problems using all four operations.  Strategies on how to teach bar modeling to students will also be discussed.
