The Benefits of Non-Pharmacological Approaches to Treatment

Nicole Pelliciari, M.S., BCBA, Alexandra Back, M.A., ATR-BC, Sara Shane, Psy.D.

In some patient cases, for both children and adults, non-pharmacological treatments will be recommended. This workshop will explore the different types of non-pharmacological treatments, and how they might contribute to improved patient outcomes. Specifically, behavior services, creative arts therapies and cognitive behavior therapy will be reviewed.

My Mind Boggling Brain: Neuroscience for Kids!

Maria Butler, Psy.D.

This workshop is designed just for kids…but adults are also included! It is important that children understand why it is so important to protect the brain and how to do it. Dr. Butler will incorporate a fun discussion and games to engage children ages 9 to 14. This workshop is geared for children, but adult supervision is required.

Growing Up: The Challenges of Transition of Neurological Care

Mark Mintz, M.D.

It is inevitable that adolescents with special needs transition into adults with special needs. Yet, patients, families, and caregivers face many obstacles in navigating a confusing and ill-prepared health care system for these young adults. This workshop will explore the challenges, issues, barriers and problems for accessing lifespan services and continuity of care, and discuss various strategies to overcome these gaps.

10:45AM - WORKSHOPS SESSION B

How Genetic Testing Can Improve Patient Outcomes

Richard Boles, M.D. (via Webinar) and Mark Mintz, M.D.

In this presentation, Dr. Boles (international expert in genetics and mitochondrial medicine) and Dr. Mintz will provide an overview of what information genetic testing can generate and how that information can contribute to improved treatment recommendations. Not all genetics testing is the same and the doctors will also explain the differences and who can translate the testing results.

Mindfulness: Connecting to Ourselves and Others

Jessica Woods, Psy.D.

Mindfulness is purposefully paying attention, without judgement. And, mindful awareness exercises can help children and adults develop this concentration and self-awareness. In this workshop, you will develop a better understanding of mindfulness, and learn some useful exercises to help master the skill. This workshop is appropriate for adults and children over seven, but children must be supervised by an adult.

The Value of a Neuropsychological Evaluation to the IEP Process

Maria Butler, Psy.D.

The IEP process can seem overwhelming for parents new to the process. This workshop will explore the benefits of having a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation and, more specifically, how the information collected can provide clarity and direction in determining educational recommendations for a student. Dr. Butler will also review when and how a parent should consider scheduling an evaluation. This workshop is appropriate for parents and educators.
