Both nationally and in California reports, African Americans are identified as having some of the lowest rates of having ever breastfeeding, initiating breastfeeding and/or exclusively breastfeeding. Lack of knowledge regarding African American women’s historical trauma and current race-related micro-stressors, and the impacts these have on maternal health and breastfeeding, prevents providers from adequately addressing the needs of the community.
