Missed Opportunities:
Looking Beyond Hospital Support for Breastfeeding Success

Sponsored by:

Please join us for a timely discussion about Missed Opportunities: Looking Beyond Hospital Support for Breastfeeding Success a live webinar with Asaiah Harville on September 4, 2020 from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Asaiah Harville BA, CLE, IBCLC, has a BA in Human Development and is an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. For three years she worked as the Grant Coordinator and Hospital Liaison for the Welcome Baby Program at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Beginning in 2018 Asaiah became the Lactation Educator for Martin Luther King, Jr Community Hospital where she sees patients during their inpatient hospital stay providing breastfeeding/infant feeding consultations, support, and education to families. She also provides education and training to perinatal department staff including basics like latch and positioning assistance to more challenging situations like jaundice, hypoglycemia and establishing a milk supply during maternal/infant separation. Asaiah teaches community prenatal breastfeeding classes while participating in local community meetings on birth and breastfeeding equity, with a vision to establish continuous breastfeeding support for the often underserved community surrounding the Martin Luther King, Jr Community Hospital campus. Asaiah facilitates a (now virtual) mommy support group through the hospital which is free to anyone who wants to join. Asaiah can also be found working in the outpatient lactation clinic at Kaiser in Baldwin Park. Asaiah is a proud Black mom of 2 breastfed children and continues in breastfeeding support, advocacy, and legacy for all of the families she is blessed to serve.

1.5 L- CERPs and 1 Contact Hours

Description
From pregnancy and the prenatal period to the postpartum period, there are multiple opportunities to engage and educate families to prepare them for breastfeeding. During the time of a pandemic, it is especially imperative that families continue to receive appropriate and timely support and education about breastfeeding in order for them to reach their breastfeeding goals. Unfortunately during the COVID-19 pandemic, families have been forced to navigate their journeys with less support. Whether from decreased interaction with their providers prenatally, early hospital discharges, or a lack of postpartum breastfeeding support, opportunities are being missed to support breastfeeding families.

  Objectives

1) To identify the missed opportunities that healthcare providers have to engage with families about breastfeeding

2) To describe the ways in which families should be supported to breastfeed during a pandemic (and always)throughout the stages of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period

3) To determine which engagement point your respective discipline will engage the families within your community and how to provide appropriate and equitable support to help the families meet their breastfeeding goal
