Additionally, Dr. Hale will be presenting tomorrow on COVID19 and latest research pertaining to the vaccine that has just been released to the public. He will also provide information on COVID-19 in breast milk.

1. Explain and apply the latest research pertaining to marijuana and opioids and its impacts on human milk
2. Summarize accurate information on opioids and marijuana allowing the patient to make an informed decision about their care and lactation choices
3. Break down the physiology of what happens during lactogenesis when marijuana and opioids are used by patients
4. Formulate the half-life for prescription opioids and recommend best practices for lactating patients using these medications
5. Evaluate risks factors for the dyad in individual situations pertaining to opioids and marijuana and lactation
6. Prescribe action plan for lactating individuals using marijuana and opioids, and their newborns
7. Learn how to counsel patients using marijuana and opioids with a non judgmental approach
8. Realize the importance of not assuming that patients using marijuana or opioids do not want to breastfeed, which leads to misinformation and limits the patient’s choices
Dr. Hale holds degrees in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology. He is best known in the field of perinatal pharmacology where he is extensively published in the use of medications in breastfeeding mothers. He developed the Lactation Risk Category, which is a rating system used world-wide for rating the safety or hazard of medications in breastfeeding mothers. He is considered by most, to be the worlds leading authority in the use of medications in breastfeeding mothers.
Dr. Hale is the director of the Infant Risk Center at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. This center provides evidence-based information on the use of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding to physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, and mothers themselves. It has received over 20,000 calls in the last 10 years. Their website is viewed by more than 3 millions visitors annually. Dr. Hale is also the Director of the Clinical Research Unit at TTUHSC Amarillo and supervises the clinical research projects on this campus. He presently serves as a special consultant for the FDA on the Pediatric Drug Committee.
He is the author of 5 books in the field of pharmacology and human lactation and numerous papers and book chapters. His book, Medications and Mothers’ Milk is now in its 19th edition. This book is a world-wide best seller, with more than a million copies sold in the last 15 years. It is used in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, obstetrical centers and drug information centers in every part of the world. His other books include: Textbook of Human Lactation; Clinical Therapy in Breastfeeding Patients, and Drug Therapy and Breastfeeding, etc.Cancellation Policy

IBCLC: BreastfeedLA is an approved Long-Term Provider by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners #CLT113-36. 2.5 L-CERPs will be awarded.
