Please join us for The Elephant in the Room: Bioethics Meets Breastfeeding a recorded webinar with September Williams, M.D.

September Williams, M.D. is a physician-author, bioethicist, and filmmaker. Her fiction and nonfiction work wants to fuel our understanding of morality, and in the best cases allow us to test run ethical obstacle-courses in our minds in search of morally sustainable actions. As a Black American woman, September promotes narrative inquiry in bioethics through stories which are diverse, humanitarian, and scientifically imbued. Her nonfiction writing covers health inequity, bioethics and film. Her own fiction aims to engage across genres, widening the base of people able to recognize bioethical conflicts and work toward their resolutions.

Dr. September Williams is a member of the National Writers Union (AFL-CIO/UAW 1981), anaffiliate of the International Federation of Journalists, and the American Society for Bioethicsand Humanities. September Williams is the author of Chasing Mercury, a romance-suspenseabout families committed to human rights and environmental justice. Chasing Mercury is thefirst novel of the ‘Chasing Mercury Toxic Trilogy’ with the upcoming books being WeighingLead and Mining Gold. She is also the author of The Elephant in the Room: Bioethical Concernsin Human Milk Banking.

Though raised in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. September Williams is agraduate of the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Division and has a Bachelor of Science inZoology from the University of Manitoba, Canada. She attended Creighton University School ofMedicine and completed internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. She isfellowship trained in three post-residency clinical subspecialties including clinical medic alethics.

Like most clinical medical ethicists (a branch of bioethics) Dr. September Williams’ work spansfrom the cradle to the grave. Her profound interest in nutrition stems from being a formerAmerican Society of Enteral and Parental Nutrition (ASPEN) Clinical Fellow inSurgical Hyperalimentation and Nutrition Support at Chicago Medical School/Rosalind FranklinUniversity; a Lowell T. Coggelshall Fellow at the University of Chicago MacLean Center forClinical Medical Ethics; and was an American College of Geriatric Medicine /Health ResourceService Area (HRSA) Fellow in Clinical Geriatrics.

Description

The Elephant in the Room: Bioethics Meets Breastfeeding will be facilitated with slides and by using the white board feature of Zoom, and by texting. The history of bioethics, and the field of clinical medical ethics with its tools, will be shared along with participant submitted case examples.

Objectives

This webinar provides participants with tools to recognize bioethicalconflicts that might hinder successful breastfeeding. The 4 Box Method of Clinical Medical Ethical Decision Making will be learned in service of prioritizing concerns in the ethically charged arena of breastfeeding difficulties.

Ask a Bioethicist: Participants submit cases in advance by text or email. Dr.Williams will select no more than three cases to illustrate how the 4 BoxMethod enhances bioethical problem solving.

RN: BreastfeedLA is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This course offers  2 contact hours of continuing education. BreastfeedLA’s provider number is CEP 16435. Licensee must maintain certificate for a period of four years.

IBCLC: BreastfeedLA is an approved Long-Term Provider by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners #CLT113-36. 1.5 E-CERPs will be awarded.
