Description

Please join us on February 19, 2021 from 9 AM to 12 PM PT for Supporting Families of Color In The NICU: Lactation and More a half day live webinar featuring Ebony Harvey, BSN, RN, CCRN, CLES, Certified Doula and Jessica Wade, CLES, Certified Doula. This webinar will focus on what families of color go through when they have their child in the NICU and how to best support them in their lactation journey.

Objectives
  • Prepare to provide culturally compliant support to families (parents and baby) who have recently exited the NICU
  • Outline the basic structure of the NICU by learning about the several components that comprise it.
  • Identify 3 different strategies to improve breastfeeding rates in the NICU for people of color
  • Differentiate between the distinguishing factors of providing support for a non-NICU family and NICU family
  • Recognize implicit biases that influence the manner that information and care is delivered to different communities
  • Discuss the importance of taking substantial time to educate patients on the benefits of donated breast milk for NICU babies and list 2 key pieces of information that parents should be informed of
  • Correlate how extreme stress caused by the NICU can cause lactating parents difficulties with milk letdown, negatively impacting their milk supply.
  • Discuss how providing emotional support to lactating parents throughout their NICU journey can positively impact lactation.
  • Identify the key roles that other hospital staff, such as social workers, have on a parent’s NICU journey and importance of fostering interdepartmental collaboration
  • Outline an improved delivery process for donor milk consent forms, including properly educating parents about donor milk.
  • Describe how the current delivery method used for consent forms in the NICU impacts lactation rates, especially in non-English speaking communities of color.
  • Recognize patterns within systems that perpetuate behaviors that overall negatively impact lactation rates in communities of color
  • Empower parents of color to recognize their power as the decision makers by encouraging them to ask all the necessary information to make a decision about their child

Speakers

Jessica Wade, Certified Doula, CLES, is the founding President and CEO of Mighty Little Giants (MLG), a National 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates through providing support, education and hope for mothers and fathers experiencing pre-term deliveries resulting in long-term stays in the hospitals’ NICU. MLG’s mission is to bridge and stand in the gap for families with babies in the NICU by embracing MLG’s core values – Integrity, Compassion and Encouragement – ultimately giving them peace and becoming their light during their dark and difficult season.  In addition to the NICU support services, MLG provides monthly peer-to-peer mentoring, emergency financial support, as well as life after the NICU life skills.Mrs. Wade has spent the last 10 years working in her community, advocating for under-served women, children and families. She is a devoted wife, a Mother of two, a Mentor, a full-time Enrollment & Outreach Specialist in the Antelope Valley, as well as a Sunday School teacher. She's also a Certified Lactation Education Specialist  (CLES) as well as a Certified Doula. Her passion for NICU families and mothers experiencing pre-term births developed as a result of her personal experience of being hospitalized on total bed-rest for eight weeks, prior to delivering her first son 12-weeks prematurely. Once her son was released from the NICU after his 143-day stay, she made a promise to God that she would do everything in her power to help families that experience similar situations.

Ebony Harvey, BSN, RN, CCRN, CLES, Certified Doula - Nurse Eb is a nurse, doula and lactation education specialist with a background of almost 2 decades in the field of nursing and loves birthwork. Working closely with families during challenging times, she understands the emotions of fear, uncertainty, and overwhelm. Nurse Eb is passionate about this field because she struggled with being a nurse, yet feeling so helpless when her family needed her the most. She witnessed first-hand all the oppression, injustices, implicit bias, and healthcare disparities. After watching a family member be mistreated, misinformed, ill-informed, disregarded, and neglected suffering a near-death experience, she made a decision to impact birthing parents' lives in a way that would help them advocate for themselves, save their lives, and ultimately the lives of their babies. Nurse Eb became a doula. As a doula, she helps parents gain the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to use their voice to have the birth they desire, knowing and believing they can birth their way. Nurse Eb answers the "how" for the parents and families that she serves. How to be seen, how to be heard, how to navigate the pitfalls of the healthcare system,  and how to tap into the power that is already on the inside of them to have the birth they desire. Nurse Eb is an activist for birth equity and speaks publicly on the Black Maternal Health Crisis. Through her work as a doula and lactation education specialist, she is intentional on raising awareness surrounding the discrimination, healthcare bias, and lack of access to resources and culturally competent providers that exist for people of color surrounding pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. Nurse Eb's mission is to ensure every family is equipped with the knowledge, tools, and resources to have a safe, informed and peaceful pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding journey in harmony with their desires.
