In observance of Native Breastfeeding Week on August 12th from 10 AM to 12:30 PM PST BreastfeedLA presents Revitalizing Culture through Breastfeeding and Chestfeeding a live webinar featuring Kimberly Moore-Salas, IBCLC, Amanda Singer, CLC, Briana Groten, BSN, IBCLC, Natasha Bowman. Join us with speakers Kimberly Moore-Salas, IBCLC and Amanda Singer, CLC from the Navajo Breastfeeding Coalition. Together they will present a powerful discussion on the ancestral teachings around breastfeeding/ chestfeeding in the Navajo culture in honor of Native Breastfeeding week. They will discuss how cultural practices in breastfeeding have been interrupted due to colonization and how we can contribute towards cultural revitalization in breastfeeding/ chestfeeding. In addition, they will be joined by panelists, Briana Groten and Natasha Bowman, indigenous birth assistants, to further the conversation around ancestral breastfeeding/ chestfeeding practices. Participants will be awarded 1.75 L-CERPs & 2 Contact Hours.

Speakers


Kimberly Moore-Salas, IBCLC Kim is born for Naakaii Dine (Mexican People) and from Tsi’naajinii (Black Streak People) clans. Born in Tuba City, maternally from Tolani Lake, AZ located in the southwestern area of the Navajo Nation. Kim’s work has been inclusive of tribal and culturally diverse communities serving the needs of prenatal, newborns, and post-partum mothers and families. She is a Co-Instructor for the Indigenous Breastfeeding Counselor training course and also has independently worked with Changing Woman Initiative assisting families with breastfeeding support out of New Mexico. Currently, Kim continues to work at ValleyWise Health Medical Center as a hospital lactation consultant for eight years where she implemented the first Arizona Lactation Mentorship Pilot Program at Valleywise Hospital mentoring three interns. Additionally, Kim is serving her second term on the United States Breastfeeding Committee Board of Directors and is a member of the Advisory Council Committee for the Navajo Nation Breastfeeding Coalition and the Urban Dine’ Community Representative for the Phoenix area.


Amanda Singer, CLC My name is Amanda Singer, and my clans are Naaneesht’ezhi Tachinii (The Charcoal-Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan) born for Honaghaanii (One-Walks-Around clan). I am a Navajo woman originally from Coalmine, NM and currently living in Fort Defiance, Arizona. For 15 years I have supported Navajo families as a Certified Lactation Counselor, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, Lactation advocate and as a full spectrum doula. I currently serve in the capacity as the Project Director for the Navajo Breastfeeding Coalition/Dine Doula Collective. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Indigenous Women’s Resource Council.

After the webinar a recording will be sent to all registrants to view for up to 45 days, therefore no refunds will be granted. It is the responsibility of the participant to view the recording while it is available. 

Payment Policy

Payment must be made during the time of online registration using a credit or debit card. If you need to make alternate payment arrangements such as a company check to be mailed to BreastfeedLA, you MUST pay the General Registration rate and contact info@breastfeedla.org. No Early Bird registration rates will apply to payments by check. This policy is in effect as of Aug 1, 2017.

Continuing Education Credits

RN: BreastfeedLA is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This course offers 2 contact hours of continuing education. BreastfeedLA’s provider number is CEP 16435. Licensee must maintain certificate for a period of four years.

IBCLC: BreastfeedLA is an approved Long-Term Provider by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners #CLT113-36. 1.75 L-CERPs will be awarded.

RDs & OTs: Maintain a copy of the agenda and certificate for CPEs for Professional Development Portfolio.
