Shelby's story:
I loved horses from my very first breath and started my education through 4-H while growing up in Minnesota. This gave me experience with many classes like showmanship & horsemanship, equitation and many time events and they all helped develop me into a well-rounded equestrian with a positive outlook as I easily found the benefit and fun of each class. I was later introduced to reining and went on to compete in the Open and Ladies divisions. I even went through the rigorous process of becoming a NRHA judge. At this time, I was also teaching the equine program and coaching the intercollegiate team at a college in Kentucky.
I was always drawn to dressage. My extensive background in training and showing experience did not match what I envisioned for a happy athlete. I was still not satisfied and was feeling like I wasn’t living my dream with horses. I was always drawn to dressage and travelled to Portugal to study this sport. My husband and I imported a magnificent Lusitano stallion that challenged me to re-evaluate how I viewed horsemanship. I was introduced to Parelli and began to dabble with the concepts of Natural Horsemanship where I had the opportunity to work with a variety of natural horsemen. This process lead me to Karen Rohlf of Dressage, Naturally who helped me find my “true north” and a way to pursue my interpretation of what a “Happy Athlete” was all about.
I am a proud Dressage, Naturally certified instructor and am both honoured and humbled that Karen has provided me with the opportunity to share the program with you! My life experiences have been varied and challenging but they have prepared me to ask many questions. This has allowed me to develop and understand why we “do” dressage (ie: good horsemanship) and why it is good for every horse and rider, no matter their discipline.
Now, David my husband and I currently reside on Excelsior Farms in Midway, Kentucky. Not only am I committed to further developing myself and my horses to their fullest potential, I am also excited to share my passion & knowledge with you so you can achieve your dream with horses.
