NHPA Half-Day Training in Lowell, Mass.

This half-day training includes a tour of an elaborate mill redevelopment project, a walking and boat tour, and a brief presentation by Adam Baacke, Lowell's former director of planning and development, who was featured in Jeff Speck's 2013 book "Walkable City."

Why Lowell?

Downtown Lowell has welcomed an influx of more than 1,500 new housing units since 2000. Median household incomes in Downtown Lowell have jumped by more than 100 percent over the same time period and entire mill complexes have been brought back to life through innovate redevelopment projects. And now the city is planning for even more changes. A downtown streetcar system is being planned. The master planned Hamilton Canal District, parts of which are currently under construction, promises the addition of new residential and commercial spaces and public gathering areas alongside the city's canal network.
