ASCE Broward Luncheon

Green Infrastructure in the Face of Rising Tides

Please join us for our monthly luncheon on

Wednesday August 7th, 2019

1 PDH will be provided!

Green Infrastructure in the Face of Rising Tides

Green infrastructure (GI) is being heralded as an innovative solution to reduce flooding and help prevent sewer, septic, and stormwater system overflows, enhance water quality treatment, reduce vulnerability to pump-driven stormwater systems, increase groundwater recharge for drinking water supply, help prevent salt water intrusion, and to improve neighborhood value and function in urban areas.

Mr. Shearer’s presentation will look beyond traditionally engineered solutions to explore local and regional scale GI strategies that hold promise for Broward County and its municipalities. GI concepts presented will include permeable pavement, bio-swales, rain gardens, urban forestry, tree planter retrofits with underground structural soils, baffle boxes and nutrient reduction technology, biosorption activated media (BAM), cisterns, denitrification walls, regenerative stormwater conveyance systems, wetland re-hydration, and living shorelines. Cost benefit comparisons of grey infrastructure and green infrastructure projects will be discussed.

Patrick Shearer, P.E.

Lead Stormwater and Ecological System Restoration Engineer, E Sciences

Patrick Shearer, P.E. has over 11 years of experience with many types of green infrastructure, stormwater management, coastal development, and water quality projects and studies.

Mr. Shearer's experience in the Chesapeake Bay watershed with stormwater and water quality projects includes a project he designed and permitted that was awarded the 2017 Best Urban BMP Retrofit Award in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. More recently he has been focused on water quality projects in Florida from the Central Indian River Lagoon down to the Biscayne Bay watershed in Miami.

Mr. Shearer is excited to share his experience with water quality improvements, wetland and storm restoration, stormwater retrofits, living shorelines, TMDL's, NPDES, and coastal resiliency - and to continue to learn from others as well.
