Legal Refresher for Engineers

This course is a refresher of legal issues for engineers.  The presentation will introduce what happens when you are sued as an engineer for negligence and have insurance coverage.  The presentation will cover legal protections to avoid being sued as an individual for engineering work by your client.  Suggestions when drafting the professional services contract to minimize legal risks for the engineer.

Mark Young, Esq., Sharholder with Kubicki Draper

Mark Young focuses in the areas of construction and business law.  His practice includes representation of general contractors, owners/developers and other construction professionals thru litigation, arbitration and mediation.

Mark has served as a panel member for the American Arbitration Association since 2014.  He has authored numerous articles on construction related topics for the American Arbitration Association, the Florida Bar’s ActionLine, and others.  He has also presented multiple times to the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Mark has been a Registered Patent attorney with the United States Patent & Trademark Office since 2001, so he is well versed in intellectual property law.  He designed land development, commercial, roadway, train and airport projects as a project engineer prior to attending law school.  Mark's education includes a B.S. in civil engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  One of his engineering textbooks recognized Mark for his efforts as an engineer student.  He also has a Juris Doctor and MBA from the University of Utah. 

Mark is a past President of the Palm Beach Chapter of the Rare Fruit Council International and has about sixty mango trees in his yard.  He is a lifetime member of the Palm Beach Beekeepers Association.

Michael F. Suarez, Shareholder, Co-Chair of Construction Group with Kubicki Draper

Michael F. Suarez practices within a broad range of matters with a focus on complex, high stakes civil litigation in state and federal courts. While a significant portion of his practice is dedicated to construction litigation where he typically represents general contractors and subcontractors, Michael has extensive experience in other areas as well. He has defended class action lawsuits involving multiple corporate defendants in TCPA violation and product liability matters, as well as litigated a variety of multimillion dollar commercial disputes in federal court. Additionally, Michael handles a variety of general liability matters, from catastrophic injury/wrongful death matters to negligent hiring/retention, automobile liability, fire losses, labor and employment and contract matters. No matter the case, Michael’s philosophy is that client service is paramount. He carefully assesses and evaluates each claim to ensure that the best possible resolution is achieved expeditiously.

Michael earned his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from St. Thomas University. While in law school, he served as a Staff Editor for the St. Thomas Law Review and was also a member of the St. Thomas Moot Court Board. Prior to law school, Michael graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. In his free time, Michael enjoys sports, travel, and history.
