Winter 2023 Youth Program Schedule

READY, SET, SOLO!

(for students ages 11 and up, along with a parent or guardian)

This 3 hour parent & child program incorporates games, interactive activities, and more to keep it fun and engaging. Led by our skilled facilitators, together, you and your child are guided in creating a plan for your child to stay at home alone safely and confidently. Discuss concerns related to your family, create guidelines, and increase communication between you and your child. *PLEASE NOTE: In Manitoba, children must not be left home alone until they are 12 years of age.

Topics include: safety at home, family rules, basic first aid, emergencies, strangers, safety in the community and online safety.

Wednesday, Mar 29 (IN PERSON) - 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Spring Break)

Time: Please refer to the times listed beside each class

Fee: $45.00 per family

IN PERSON CLASSES: All materials will be provided. NO MANUAL PICKUP REQUIRED.

BABYSITTER TRAINING

(for students ages 12 and up)

This 6.5 hour training is packed full of interesting, interactive activities to teach students how to care for babies and children safely and responsibly. Our skilled facilitators will teach your child the ins and outs of what it takes to become a responsible (and fun) babysitter! Students who have taken our course feel more confident to stay home alone, especially when they have to take care of younger siblings or other family members. *In Manitoba, children must not be left home alone until they are 12 years of age.

 Topics include: accident prevention, fire safety, emergencies, kids at different ages, and employer/employee responsibilities.

Tuesday, March 28, 2023 (ON ZOOM) (Spring Break)

Time: 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Fee: $45.00 per student 

Students must be turning 12 years of age within 2 months to participate.

All successful participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course.

ONLINE CLASSES: Manual must be picked up prior or shipped via courier for a fee.

FIRST AID/CPR TRAINING FOR BABYSITTERS- IN PERSON

(for students ages 12 and up)

Having First Aid/CPR training is a great way to stand out as a babysitter! Come and learn CPR, choking rescue and how to deal with emergencies ranging from severe bleeding to broken bones to poisoning.  You will learn how to respond to emergency situations and, more importantly how to prevent them.  This is a Red Cross certified course, you will receive a manual, reusable CPR mask and a certificate upon completion.

Date: Saturday, March 4, 2023 (IN PERSON)

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Fee: $95.00 per student 

Students must be turning 12 years of age within 2 months to participate.

All successful participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course.

IN PERSON CLASSES: All supplies including manual will be provided. Students must bring a bagged, nut free lunch. NO PICKUP REQUIRED.

STUDY SKILLS FOR STUDENTS- IN PERSON

(for students) 

Students learn the three key things for good study habits, responsibility, time management, and communication. Students identify their preferred learning style (visual, auditory, tactile) and learn about strategies for each style. Tips on different types of tests.  There will be discussions, activities, and tips for students around test/school/project anxiety. Parent tip sheets to support your student included. 

*Not for students that require support in a learning environment.

This program will be held in person, at South Winnipeg Family Information Centre, 800 Point Road, Winnipeg.

Dates: 

  Saturday, January 21, 2023 (Grades 9 - 11) IN PERSON

Saturday,  February 18, 2023 (Grades 6 - 8) IN PERSON

Time: 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Fee: $45.00 per student

Materials needed: Manuals will be provided at the beginning of the class.  NO PICKUP REQUIRED.

  • For In-person classes Manuals will be given out at the class.
  • Students are required to bring a bagged, nut free lunch for Babysitter Training workshops.

Online programs will be held on Zoom

  • For Online classes Manuals must be picked up before the class date at 800 Point Road or shipped for a fee.
  • Courier service is available for a fee within Winnipeg
  • If you are outside of Winnipeg and require shipping charges will apply
  • A Zoom account is not needed to participate. 
  • You will recieve a Zoom link via email, a couple of days prior to the course start date, and on the day of the course.

CANCELLATION POLICY & TERMS OF AGREEMENT: 

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR PAID PROGRAMS:

If you withdraw from a program more than seven days prior to the start date, you may receive a refund of your course fee, less a $5.00 administration fee. After this time, or once the program has started no refunds will be made. Full refunds will be issued if we cancel a course.

TERMS OF AGREEMENT: 

For ZOOM CLASSES:

  • Please review the Zoom privacy policy: https://zoom.us/privacy
  • I understand SWFIC will not record any sessions on ZOOM, and recording the class is also prohibited for participants.
  • Participants must attend on time or may not be admitted to the Zoom program.
  • Sharing Zoom links is strictly prohibited. All participants must register in order to attend the program.
  • Participants will be required to turn their cameras on to be able to fully evaluate their participation during discussions and hands on learning activities.
  • SWFIC reserves the right to remove participants from a course for abusive or disruptive behaviour.

ZOOM Babysitter Training additional requirements: An adult must be present in the home while the child is attending the virtual program. We require a parent/guardian email address, and a phone number where the adult can be reached during the program.
