This is a 24-hour, 4-day Avalanche Level 1 Recreation certified training that will get you and your backcountry partners practicing decision making in avalanche terrain and performing avalanche rescue that saves lives. The course is taught to American Avalanche Association (A3) standards.

Avalanche Level 1 Rec topics include:

  • Avalanche Basics & Characteristics
  • Terrain
  • Snowpack and Weather
  • Information Gathering
  • Planning, Communication & Decision-making
  • Making Relevant Observations
  • Terrain and Travel
  • Basic Avalanche Companion Rescue

Learn: Backcountry survival skills, trailhead checks, travel protocol, anticipating avalanche consequences, organized companion rescue strategy, search techniques and more. 

Come prepared to be outdoors. Bring your personal equipment that you typically carry with you in the mountains including: beacon, shovel probe. A gear list will be provided. The course meets on Thursday and Friday evening in the classroom and Saturday and Sunday all day out in the field. 

Course will run from 6-10 pm Thursday and 6-9 pm Friday in the classroom. Then Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday 8 am to 5 pm in the field, location depending on conditions.
