"Are Killer whales Mama's Boys?                                                                      Adaptive Prolonged Postreproductive Life Span in Killer Whales"                 Emma Foster's Paper, presented by Howard Garrett, Orca Network                                                Emma Foster, lead author of a recent paper on the long post-reproductive lifespan in female orcas, describes for science and offers a theory to explain the astounding lifetime relationship between orca mothers and their sons.

"Tracking transient killer whales and humpback whales of the Salish Sea,  using individual photo-identification"                                                                        Mark Malleson, Prince of Whales Sr. zodiac skipper/Researcher                                                Mark will discuss who has influenced and inspired him over the years to enable him to collect data on whales that use the Salish Sea. He will share a selection of images from his encounters that have helped to document the presence of transient killer whales and the repopulation of humpback whales in these inside waters.

"Latest effort to remove Endangered Species Act Protection from Southern   Resident killer whales – a misguided effort"                                                               Steve Mashuda, Attorney for NW Office of Earthjustice                                                                              This talk will highlight the legal (and some scientific) flaws in the petition to “delist” Southern Resident filed by California irrigators and property-rights groups.

 "Return of the River" sample from film about the Elwha River dam removal      John Gussman: Director/Cinematographer; Jessica Plumb: Producer/Writer/Lead Editor   Return of the River is a film about the largest dam removal project in history, currently unfolding on the Olympic Peninsula. The filmmakers will screen a sample of work in progress, and discuss their experience on the Elwha River over the past year. Fundamentally, the film is about people and their relationship to the ecosystem they call home. 

"Responding to the Threat of Oil Spills to Southern Resident Killer Whales in U.S. Waters"
Don Noviello, Oil Spill Planning and Response Specialist, WA Dept of Fish and Wildlife
Don will share response planning efforts undertaken by WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife to protect endangered Southern Resident orcas from the threat of oil spills.

"Of whales and men: Ocean pollution in the 21st Century"
Dr. Peter Ross, Research Scientist/Marine mammal toxicologist, Fisheries and Oceans, Canada
The discovery that killer whales in the NE Pacific Ocean are some of the most contaminated mammals in the world raises important questions about the source of these contaminants, the risks they present to these cetaceans, and the future integrity of their habitat. 

Cost is $30 ($25 for Students/Seniors).Sorry, lunch numbers have been turned in - if interested in buying lunch, inquire Saturday morning, there may be some available.
