Join us for the 2- day SoundIntuition Speaker Series

On AVT Day (Day 1), explore what the world offers in terms of cutting-edge research and practice that produces incredible listening, spoken language, academic, and life outcomes for very young children who are deaf and hard of hearing (0-6.11 years of age) in Listening and Spoken Language Auditory-Verbal Therapy/Education (AVT/AVEd).

On AST Day (Day 2), explore what the world offers in terms of cutting eduge research and practice that produces improved outcomes in listening, communication and quality of life and in Auditory Skills Training (aural rehabilitation) that's designed for older children, teenagers, and adults who are deaf and hard of hearing (6.11 years of age and up).

Karen MacIver-Lux will be leading both days on providing updates in practice and case studies with the support of distinguished speakers/clinicians/researchers around the world. Don't miss the opportunity to learn from distinguished and talented members of the international professional community!

AVT DAY/DAY 1: Auditory-Verbal Therapy/Education Updates

  • Discuss the Principles of LSLS AVT/AVED and what they mean when seeing clients who may need additional support(s) for communication (e.g. AAC, ASL, etc.).
  • Discuss and demonstrate changes/updates to Auditory-Verbal Therapy/Education as practised in 2023.
  • Describe new and key variables of successful outcomes that research in 2022-2023 has identified.
  • Explain the development and treatment of auditory processing skills in the Buffalo Model Approach, Bellis-Fere Model, and Tomatis Approach and demonstrate how these can be incorporated into Auditory-Verbal Therapy/Education.
  • Explore new strategies and conditions that have been developed in AVT/AVEd and list the evidence that supports the use of these strategies and conditions.
  • Describe additional challenges/treatments that children who are deaf and hard of hearing may have related to prematurity, epilepsy, vestibular function, USHER, ANSD, CMV, suspected CI failures (soft/hard) and their referral sources/suggestions.
  • Discuss whether group therapy sessions are possible in AVT (they are!) and what they might look like.
  • Describe and incorporate strategies and conditions that help children learn optimally and feel their best.
  • Participate in a live AVT session with Karen MacIver-Lux and the clients.

ASTDay/DAY 2: Auditory Skills Training: Introduction and UPDATES

  • Describe Auditory Skills Training (AST), their principles, and what they mean when seeing clients who may need additional support(s) for communication (e.g. AAC, ASL, etc.).
  • Describe the secrets of the ultimate auditory processor-high and low-level auditory tasks for infants to teenagers with hearing loss (0-12 years of age).
  • Describe what therapy with late implanted/aided looks like and review the expected progress schedule.
  • Explain and use the updated Auditory Competencies Checklist in Everyday Situations and Settings (ACCESS-10) and the Loudness Intensity Perception Scale (LIPS).
  • Describe how daily life from home to work to extracurricular activities stimulate listening and communication skills enhancement and incorporate these into AST sessions.
  • Explain how a client's occupation guides goal setting and activity planning in AST.
  • Describe the profile of a low and high-performing listener and explain how activities can be adjusted to create successful listening opportunities.
  • Review case studies of teenagers and adults who have been struggling with soft failures of CI(s).
  • Describe osteopathy and explain how osteopathy can benefit listeners with hearing challenges.
  • Describe the elements of successful coaching with listening partners and listeners.
  • Participate in a live AST session with Karen MacIver-Lux and the clients.
