Seasons of Planning

Presented by: Chris Brannon & Paul Black, Elder Law & Special Needs Attorneys

In this presentation, attorneys Chris Brannon and Paul Black will employ a case-study based approach focused on a hypothetical family (the Jones Family).  The presentation will follow the Jones Family over a 60-year plus period to explain how the family's estate and incapacity planning needs change over time, and explain the planning tools and techniques that are used to help meet these needs.

The presentation begins when Harry and Wanda Jones are 30- a young couple married three years ago who are now preparing for the birth of their first child.  The presentation then visits Harry and Wanda at regular 15-year intervals: At ages 45, 60, 75, and 90- to explore how their estate and incapacity planning needs are changing, and to explain how these changing needs can be addressed.

The planning tools to be discussed in detail include:  Advance Directives for Healthcare, Durable Financial Powers of Attorney, Last Will and Testaments, Testamentary guardianship, Special Needs Trusts, Retirement account beneficiary designations, Revocable Living Trusts, Long-Term Care Planning for Medicaid and Veterans Benefits, and Probate/Estate Administration.
