Basic Mediation Skills Training

CMCRI’s Basic Mediation Skills Training (BMST) is a highly interactive 30-hour course, taught by experienced mediators and trainers, that provides participants with the fundamentals of the facilitative mediation process.

In the “facilitative” model of mediation, a third party mediator aids or assists the parties' own efforts to reach a mutually satisfying outcome. The mediator does not evaluate the merits or make recommendations for the outcome of the case but rather “facilitates” the process and helps the parties to productively resolve their conflict by exploring their interests and options.  This approach is also sometimes referred to as 'interest-based' mediation.

The BMST covers the following areas:

  • Conflict Theory and Styles
  • Role of the Mediator
  • Role of Confidentiality and Neutrality
  • Building Trust and Setting the Stage
  • Active Listening
  • Identification of Positions and Interests
  • Reframing and Summarizing Techniques
  • Setting an Agenda
  • Dealing with Impasse
  • Agreement Writing
  • Ethics and Standards of Practice

The training is focused on practical skill-building with many group exercises and role-plays.

WHEN IS THE BASIC MEDIATION SKILLS TRAINING?

Friday, May 3: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Saturday, May 4:  8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Friday, May 10: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Saturday, May 11: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

A continental breakfast and snacks will be provided on all days.

WHAT IS MEDIATION?

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential and flexible process in which a neutral mediator assists negotiations between two or more disputing parties.  Agreements reached in mediation often meet the needs of all involved parties and are more likely to be upheld.  Mediation is not a determination of who is right or wrong, and the mediator is not a decision-maker.  Mediation is not an end-point -- other rights, responsibilities, and options are still available.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEDIATION?

Parties are able to devise creative solutions, often in less time, at less cost, and with greater satisfaction than through litigation. Because parties craft a mutually-acceptable solutions together, mediation is often successful in producing high quality settlements and durable agreements which help preserve ongoing relationships between the parties.

WHAT IS THE ADVANCED ROLE PLAY MENTORING TRAINING PROGRAM?

In response to feedback from training participants, CMCRI has developed a formal apprenticeship program to help trainees develop beyond the Basic Mediation Skills Training. The apprenticeship offers opportunities for recent trainees to act as mediators in 4 role-play sessions with individualized feed back in groups of 4 or fewer. At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices will receive customized, individual feedback from CMCRI staff.

WHEN IS THE ADVANCED ROLE PLAY MENTORING PROGRAM?

The apprenticeship will be scheduled based on the participants’ schedules.

HOW MUCH DO THE TRAINING & APPRENTICESHIP COST?

  • BMST Training: $775 (before April 3rd $700)
  • BMST Training & Apprenticeship: $1175
  • Apprenticeship only*: $500

*To take the apprenticeship training, you must have received at least 30 hours of basic mediation training. This training may have come from CMCRI or elsewhere.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY TRAINING?

Participants who have completed the training can bring their productive communication skills back to their place of work or community and can provide confidential mediation services in the state of Rhode Island.  There may be a limited number of volunteer opportunities with CMCRI on a case-by-case basis. Many other states and programs accept mediation certificates from out of state, but each state varies in its requirements. CMCRI strongly advocates that newly-trained mediators participate in an apprenticeship or work under the supervision or mentorship of more experienced mediators for a period of time before mediating on their own.

In addition, successful leaders and managers find mediation skills very helpful.  Two important qualities in being a successful leader, manager, or business person are understanding the interests of others and effectively communicating one’s own interests. Mediation Training is an essential stepping-stone in becoming a more skilled leader, problem solver and peace maker.

Whether they opt to formally mediate or not, trainees can expect to exit the course with enhanced conflict resolution skills, including listening and observation skills; self-awareness and self-monitoring skills; the ability to identify issues and help people focus on problem-solving and the process; the ability to reframe and summarize as needed; and the ability to identify and address ethical dilemmas.

The Rhode Island state statute governing mediation requires 30 hours of training to ensure the provision of confidential mediation services.  In the past, CMCRI has received approval from the Rhode Island MCLE commission for CLE credits for Rhode Island attorneys, and from the NASW of Rhode Island for CEU credits for social workers.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Rhode Island Statute 9-19-44: Mediator Confidentiality in Mediation Proceedings, provides certain protections for mediators, but only if they have taken a 30-hour training, have  two years of professional mediation experience, or have been appointed by a judicial or government body.  As a result, only those trainees who have completed the entire 30-hour training will receive a certificate of completion at the close of the training.

If participants need to make up missed time in order to complete their 30 hours, they will be assessed an additional fee.
