Learn from the man who built our salt kiln, Florida clay artist and kiln builder Ted Camp... 

Ted received his BA from College of Wooster, Ohio and his MFA in ceramics at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Ted served as professor and chair of The State College of Florida, Bradenton and also taught in the Summer Six art program at Skidmore College. Upon retirement from The State College of Florida, Ted was named Resident Artist, "which means that while the responsibilities and the paycheck will be gone, he gets to stick around to use the department's equipment while returning his attention to his art."  His work is currently on exhibit at L'attitude Gallery, Boston, Symmetry Gallery, Saratoga Springs and Craftsman HouseGallery, St. Petersburg, FL. In addition, Ted is currently on the Board of Directors at Artcenter Manatee where he also teaches ceramics classes.

We are very pleased to have Ted here again this year to lead this workshop.  Everyone will benefit from his many years of kiln building and salt-firing experience.   

Students should bring 6-8 pieces of bisqued-fired cone 10 Stoneware or Porcelain in primarily vertical format to the Friday meeting. Pieces may be pots or sculpture and should vary in scale. After a discussion of applicable slips and glaze choices, students will apply them and participate in the loading of their pieces into the salt kiln early Friday evening. Saturday will be spent firing the kiln with the planned salting taking place in the early evening. During the day, the instructor will present a thorough discussion on the chemistry of clay bodies and slips and how the student, who has access to the necessary chemicals, can alter the visual effects of both clay body and slip decoration to meet their aesthetic preferences. Because the kiln cools slowly, we will meet again on Monday to unload it and then discuss the fired results. With the information received on Saturday, together with their fired results, students will have a path to follow for their future salt firing.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

FRIDAY JULY 13
9 -10 AM INTRODUCTIONS
11- NOON Demonstration and explanation of slip/glaze application
NOON – 1 pm Lunch
1PM - 5 PM Students apply their glazes and slips5-7 PM Students participate in loading the kiln for next day firing.

SATURDAY JULY 14 – SALT FIRING
9 am - NOON While the kiln is firing, discussion of the use of slips,chemistry, and workshop booklet info will be discussed,along with the explanation of the firing process.
NOON – 1 PM LUNCH
1 PM – 4 PM Demonstrations of the use of slips as both texture and color design.
6 PM – 8 PM TENTATIVE: At sometime during this period,students will participate in the introduction of salt near the conclusion of the firing.
8 PM TENTATIVE: KILN SHUT-OFF

SUNDAY JULY 15
9 AM-12PM Finish demos and cover questions from booklet.Afternoon Kiln continues to cool and students are encouraged to enjoythe many entertainment options in the city of Saratoga.

MONDAY JULY 16
9 AM – Noon Unload kiln, Kiln wash door bricks, kiln interior, and clean-up.

The workshop will be limited to 12 participants, on a first come, first served basis with a preference given to our members.
