Course Description:

Through PowerPoint presentation, videos of experts in the field, class discussions, partner work, case examples, and experiential opportunities, participants will come to understand the reason that somatic work can be life-changing to people who have experienced trauma.  The participants will be gaining insight into their own experiences and those of the people with whom they work.  Understanding the body and brain's relationship to trauma and the take home exercises will enable all participants to implement new techniques immediately in their own practices, and through listed resources, be able to expand their own expertise to provide trauma treatment from a new perspective.  

Leaning Objectives:

1. List trauma causes and describe the differences between developmental trauma and once time events to get a better understanding of how to provide treatment and understand diagnoses.
2. Participate in class exercises in which the participants will name sensations, emotions, and meaning, and indicate where they take place in their own bodies to demonstrate an understanding of the brain's relationship to the body for the purpose of doing the same as a therapeutic technique toward integrating trauma.
3. Demonstrate techniques implementing slowing down sessions during partner work to be able to do the same in their therapeutic work with others.
4. Compare new techniques to those they currently use as a way to integrate the learning.
5. Discuss and explore with the class and their partners their new understanding of how their own nervous systems respond to somatic techniques explored during the training.
6. Apply techniques to reduce the activation of their own nervous systems to be able to assist others to do the same.

Speaker Information:

Sherrie's first profession was as and educator, teaching Elementary and Special Education in New Jersey and North Carolina where she worked in both the public and private sectors.  She worked with preschool age through teens in all areas of developmental disabilities.  She then held numerous positions in the mental health field and contracted for the State of North Carolina providing training to mental health hospitals, administrators, practitioners and agencies across the state.  Upon moving to Maryland in 2005, she trained as a Mental Health Counselor and earned her certification as a Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and will complete a three year training in Somatic Experiencing by October 2019.

Continuing Education:

National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Credits - 5.5 hours
"This course has been approved by CHEP as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider for 5.5 CEs.  NAADAC provider number 62665, CHEP is responsible for all aspects of their programming."

Maryland SW Credits - 5.5 hours
Maryland Social Workers - Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners: "Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs and maintains full responsibility for this program.  This training qualifies for Category 1 continuing education credits."

National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Credits - 5.5 hours
Certified Counselors - National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): "Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6140.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC are clearly identified.  Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs."  

Target Audience: Addiction Counselors, Certified Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program and 30 minutes after the start of the program. 

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion.  Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

Eastern Shore Hospital Center Employee w. ID - $45

Registration will close end of day on March 29th; however, we do accept onsite registration.

Registration includes light breakfast items starting at 8:30am.  Lunch will not be included.

If you are registering as a Department of VA Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program or you can choose to pay the regular rate.
