Course Description:

Suicide is not so much about wanting to die, but about a powerful need for pain to end.  People choose suicide because they feel unable to cope with feelings of pain, hopelessness, helplessness, shame, loneliness, isolation, and uncertainty.

Suicide is not a binary issue.  There is no "on-off" switch.  Suicide has no single cause, and the causes and predictors or suicide vary across individuals.  Due to this heterogeneity, most risk factors account for a small proportion of the variance in predicting suicide deaths.  Suicide is best prevented by reducing as many risk factors as possible while activating protective factors.

This skills training event will help clinicians sharpen their skills in the areas of identification, assessment and treatment of self-injurious and potentially suicidal patients.  Emphasis will be placed on clinical assessment and prevent strategies and the development of a patient safety plan.

Leaning Objectives:

1. Discuss an actuarial prediction model for suicide prevention.
2. Review key questions that can be asked as a part of an assessment.
3. Describe the process of contracting for safety with a potentially suicidal client.
4. Describe the steps utilized to develop a client safety plan
5. Discuss both psychoterapeutic and psychopharmacological approaches to suicide prevention and treatment.
6. Describe and discuss six clinical pearls helpful when conducting assessment.
