Course Description:

This presentation will explore the relationship between depression, anxiety, and addiction.  Symptoms of depression and anxiety are often found in the later stages of addiction.  These symptoms might be indicative of a true co-occurring disorder or might just be symptoms of the disease of addiction or the trauma of witnessing its growth.  The progession of addiction for both those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction and their family members/close friends will be explored in detail.  The stages of recovery will be explored fully and will include treatment factors that improve the probability that obstacles, such as symptoms of depression and anxiety, are hurdled successfully.  LAstly, resiliency factors that imrpove the likelihood of sustained recovery efforts will be reviewed and practiced.

Leaning Objectives:

1. Recognize the progression of addiction and how the late stage can often mimic or trigger symptoms of depression and anxiety in those addicted and their family members/close friends.
2. Integrate the stages of recovery including methods to evaluate, address and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
3. Recognize internal and external resiliency factors that can be assessed and/or nurtured for greater recovery success.
