11/20/2019 - Ethical Boundary Management in Clinical Practice

Dr. Michael Heitt

Important Notes & Announcements:

  • THE LOCATION FOR THIS PROGRAM HAS CHANGED.  WE WILL NOW HOST THIS PROGRAM AT WATER'S EDGE EVENTS CENTER, 4687 MILLENNIUM DRIVE, BELCAMP, MD 21017
  • This course is approved for NAADAC, APA, MDSW, NBCC, ACCME, and general credits.
  • This is a 1/2 day program that will award certificates of 3.0 credit hours.
  • By submitting your registration form, you are agreeing to CHEP's cancellation policy.  Please review in detail prior to registering.

Course Description:

Go beyond a superficial review of the basic ethical concepts you learned back in graduate school and when you were studying for your licensing exams.  Take those somewhat steile academic concepts and apply them to everyday practice.  Focusing primarily on boundary issues, we will discuss key elements of risk management that you can implement the day you return to your office.  This workshop will be structured as an interactive exercise rather than using an "ask the ethicist" format, so be prepared to be actively engaged and ready to think and discuss some tough real life situations with your colleagues.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe models of ethical reasoning.
2. Identify fundamentals of ethical practice.
3. Apply these principles to case examples.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Michael Heitt is a licensed psychologist in private practice.  The primary focus of his clinical and consultative activities center around working with physicians, executives and other professionals who are dealing with personal and occupational challenges.  He frequently consults to small and mid-size companies on a variety of workplace and organizational issues, and is recognized by local Courts as being an expert witness in Clinical Psychology.

Dr. Heitt has presented internationally on topics ranging from workplace violence and professional impairment to human resources and personnel development, as well as topics such as psychological ethics, disaster psychiatry and clinical assessment.  He is a former Chair and current Member of the Maryland Psychological Association's (MPA) Ethics Committee and Colleague Assistance Program.

Dr. Heitt earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago in 1996.  He has served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Loyola University Maryland.  Additionally, he is the instructor for the Maryland State Jurisprudence Licensure Exam preparatory course offered by MPA and an online ethics course on boundaries.
