Course Description:

This training will focus on the implementation of evidence-based practices for PTSD. Emphasis will be on reviewing available treatment options and the nuts and bolts of measurement-based care. The training will review practical tips on how to optimize delivery of PTSD evidenced-based care. Common clinical considerations such as how to treat PTSD and co-occurring substance use and suicidal ideation will be reviewed. 

Learning Objectives:

1. List 2-3 PTSD symptoms and diagnostic considerations to inform/complete diagnostic assessment based on DSM 5 criteria.
2. Name 2-3 first-line treatment strategies and apply shared-decision making with their patients based on measurement-based care guidance.
3. Theorize how to treat PTSD and co-morbid substance use.
4. State how suicide risk monitoring and assessment is incorporated into evidence-based care for PTSD. Providers will be able to use suicide risk monitoring and assessment in their clinical care settings.
5. Explain components of measurement-based care and how they can collect and share measures to support their clinical care and decisions.
6. Identify how measurement-based care can aid in treatment planning. Providers will be able to describe how they can use MBC to tailor ongoing care and inform the discharge process.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Erin Romero is the Trauma Recovery Program Manger for the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS), the VISN 5 PTSD Mentor and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry within the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She oversees provision of outpatient PTSD services at the Baltimore VA Hospital, Perry Point VA Hospital, and community Outpatient Clinics. Dr. Romero also oversees the PTSD Intensive Outpatient Program which is located at the Perry Point VA Hospital and the Veterans Integration into Academic Leadership Program. In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Romero provides direct clinical care to Veterans diagnosed with PTSD across the eras. She has specialized training in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Romero has been affiliated with Veterans Affairs (VA) since 2008. 

She received her doctoral degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatryand Behavioral Sciences, Division of Psychology, and her undergraduate degree from Georgetown Universtiy. She completed a psychology predoctoral internship at the VAMHCS in 2009. Dr. Romero has been actively involved in research with the Health Disparities and Public Policy Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and with the VAMHCS. 

Peter Allman, LCSW-C is the Program Coordinator and Supervisory Social Worker for the Trauma Intervention Dual Diagnosis Empowerment Intesive Outpatient Program for PTSD (TIDES) at the Perry Point VA Medical Center in Maryland. He is also the Supervisory Social Worker for the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs at the Perry Point VA. Mr. Allman Coordinates the delivery of trauma focused treatment in the PTSD IOP, and has specialized training and experience providing evidence based psychotherapy for PTSD. Mr. Allman is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work and compelted his graduate training at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program, and 30 minutes after the start of the program.  Attendees are expected to stay until the conclusion of the day in order to receive credits for the day.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

Registration will close at the end of the day on October 14th; however, we do accept onsite registration as long as space allows.  

Registration includes coffee, cold beverages and light breakfast snacks starting at 8:30am with registration.  Lunch is not provided. 

If you are registering as a VA VISN 5 Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID Badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program unless you pay the regular community rate.
