Course Description:

This lecture will present clinical, epidemiological and molecular data related to the human papillomavirus (HPV) and its associated lesions.  We will discuss mechanisms of cellular transformation in HPV-induced cancers and describe the histopathological features, markers and special stains used by pathologists to aid in the diagnosis.  We also will analyze recent data and trends regarding this increasingly common infection and methods of prevention, including the HPV vaccine, in order to aid oral health professionals in educating their patients.  Finally, we will discuss another recently identified form of oral squamous cell carcinoma, that of verrucous carcinoma-like lesions in the elderly. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the pathology seen in papillomavirus-induced lesions, both clinically and microscopically.
2. Discuss the link between HPV and the emerging phenomenon of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
3. Review the entity proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and its significance as a pre-malignant lesion.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Basile received his DDS degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed a one-year dental residency at the VA Hospital in Washington, DC.  After practicing dentistry for three years, he began his oral pathology and research training at Harvard Dental School, becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and graduating with a degree in Oral Biology in 2002.  Dr. Basile was a Post-Doctoral research Fellow at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, NIH, in Bethesda, MD before his current position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Dental School in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences.  He is also a member of the Molecular and Structural Biology branch of the Marlene and Stuart Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  Dr. Basile has been a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist since 2008.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program, and 30 minutes after the start of the program.  Attendees are expected to stay until the conclusion of the day in order to receive the access code to complete their evaluation and receive the credits for the day.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion.  You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the day in order to complete the evaluation.  Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

Prices increase two weeks prior to the program date as indicated above.  Registration will close at the end of the day on June 16th; however, we do accept onsite registration as long as space allows.  

Registration includes continental breakfast snacks starting at 7:30am.  Lunch will not be provided as this is a half-day program.

If you are registering as a VA VISN 5 Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID Badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program unless you pay the regular community rate.
