Course Description:

In treating today's periodontal patient successfully, the clinician must customize a treatment plan that goes beyond the removal of plaque and calculus.  Achieving excellent clinicial outcomes involves assessing for systemic issues, communicating and customizing home care according to the patient's level of understanding and ability to perform home care procedures, and choosing appropriate adjuncts to care.  In this course we will explore the multi-faceted treatment planning approach, including scheduling and coding.  We will aldo discuss effective instrument sharpening, and we will explore strategies for dealing with informed consent and refusal of definitive care.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the factors involved in periodontal breakdown, etiology, and chemotherapeutic approaches to microbial control.
2. Explore the most prominent systemic disease interrelationships.
3. Choose adjuncts to care based on severity and appropriateness, develop better clinical protocol, and customize home care modalities.
4. Describe which codes are most appropriate for particular care types and explore coding errors.
5. Demonstrate how instrument sharpening can be accomplished easily and effectively.
6. Develop the best approach when patients refuse definitive care for periodontal disease and implement informed consent.

Speaker Information:

Dianne Glasscoe Watterson, RDH, BS, MBA has more than four decades in dentistry.  Her business, Watterson Speaking/Consulting LLC, is based in Lexington, NC.  Since 1997, Dianne has been published extensively, including authoring two monthly columns in national dental publications - one in Dental Economics called "Practice Wisdom", and the other in RDH called "Staff Rx."  Dianne is a well-known provider of continuing education for dental professionals and has presented for associations and major dental meetings across the US.  In addition to serving on the editoral board of RDH magazine, Dianne is a co-author of Foundations of Periodontics for the Dental Hygienist, a text used in many hygiene programs.  She has published three books: Manage Your Practice Well; The Consummate Dental Hygienist; and Real World Dental Hygiene which won an Apex Award for publication excellence.  Dianne was honored by Dentsply(TM) as a "Distinguised Dental Professional" in 2005.  Also, Dianne was honored by Colgate(TM) in 2009 and 2010 as a "Key Opinion Leader" and serves on their Oral Health Advisory Board.  Dianne has been chosen as a Leader in Consulting/Speaking by Dentistry Today every year since 2006.  In addition to being a former faculty member in the dental hygiene program at Guilford Technical Community College, she is a member of Christian Medical/Dental Association, American Association of Dental Office Managers, American Academy of Dental Hygiene, and American Dental Hygienist Association.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program, and 30 minutes after the start of the program.  Attendees are expected to stay until the conclusion of the day in order to receive the access code to complete their evaluation and receive the credits for the day.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion.  You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the day in order to complete the evaluation.  Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

Dentist - Community Provider: $195 prior to 5/22/2020; $205 starting 5/22/2020
Hygienist - Community Provider: $159 prior to 5/22/2020; $169 starting 5/22/2020
Assistant/Staff - Community Provider: $145 prior to 5/22/2020; $155 starting 5/22/2020
VA VISN 5 Employee (with ID): $35 prior to 5/22/2020; $45 starting 5/22/2020

Prices increase two weeks prior to the program date as indicated above.  Registration will close at the end of the day on June 2nd; however, we do accept onsite registration as long as space allows.  

Registration includes a continental breakfast starting at 7:30am and a buffet lunch.

If you are registering as a VA VISN 5 Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID Badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program unless you pay the regular community rate.
