10/21/20 - Understanding Serious Mental Illness

Course Description:

There are an estimated 11 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with SMI, defined as mental, behavioral or emotional disorders resulting in serious functional impairment which substantially interferes with major life activities. This workshop addresses the conceptualization and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental, psychotic and select traumatic disorders, as well as the common co-occurring disorders that accompany them. Aspects of therapy and therapist self-care are also considered in relation to these rapidly evolving groups of disorders.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss what constitutes a serious mental disorder
2. Identify at least one significant change in the schizophrenic disorders
3. Discuss traumatic and complex traumatic disorders and how to distinguish them
4. Identify at least one assessment tool useful in the assessment of serious mental illness

Speaker Information:

Dr. Greg Neimeyer, PhD is professor emeritus of psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Florida.  A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, he is also the recipient of its award for Outstanding Research in Career and Personality Psychology.  A previous Chair of the Executive Board of the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs in the United States, he has also been inducted as a lifetime member into the Academy of Distinguished Teacher Scholars.  He currently serves as the Director of the APA Office of Continuing Education in Psychology and the Center for Learning and Career Development in Washington, DC.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to register their name and email address on the Webex platform and receive an Attention Rating of 90% or higher in order to receive credits. The Attention Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.
