Course Description:

Though it might not seem this way on the surface, there are a lot of similarities between rural practice and working in small communities or contained settings like employee assistance programs. In this workshop we’ll discuss different work settings and the ethical challenges that frequently occur when practicing psychology in many of these environments. Do you think that because you practice in a major city like Baltimore these issues don’t apply to you? Think again: most of us have to deal with multiple relationships, limited specialty referral options and other issues that are often thought to primarily be rural practice issues. Be prepared to actively discuss these tough ethical issues and how you’ve dealt with them in the past, and to hear from others and how they’ve done so too. This three-hour ethics workshop meets the requirement for ethics/law/risk management for the Board of Examiners. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Review models of ethical reasoning.
2. Discuss APA Principles and Standards and Maryland laws and regulations.
3. Discuss fundamentals of ethical practice in rural, small and contained settings.
4. Apply models of ethical reasoning, ethical codes and laws/regulations to your own practice of psychology.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Michael Heitt is a licensed psychologist in private practice. The primary focus of his clinical and consultative activities center around working with physicians, executives and other professionals who are dealing with personal and occupational challenges. He frequently consults to small and mid-size companies on a variety of workplace and organizational issues, and is recognized by local Courts as being an expert witness in the fields of Clinical and Forensic Psychology. Dr. Heitt has presented internationally on topics ranging from workplace violence and professional impairment to human resources and personnel development, as well as topics such as psychological ethics, disaster psychiatry and clinical assessment. He is a member of the Maryland Psychological Association’s (MPA) Ethics Committee and has formerly been the Chair of MPA’s Ethics Committee and Colleague Assistance Program. Dr. Heitt earned his Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago in 1996. He’s been a faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University and Loyola University Maryland. Additionally, he is the instructor for the Maryland State Jurisprudence Licensure Exam preparatory course offered by MPA.

American Psychological Association (APA) Credits - 3.0 hours

National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Credits - 3.0 hours

National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Credits - 3.0 hours

Board of Social Work Examiners West Virginia (WVSW) Credits - 3.0 hours
"The Ethics of Practicing in Rural, Contained and Small Communities" scheduled for December 9, 2020 as a virtual webinar has been approved by the WV Board of Social Work Examiners for 3.0 CEU's; provider number 499999.

Target Audience: Social Workers, Psychologists, Certified Counselors, Addiction Counselors, Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses

Educational Methods Used: Lecture, PowerPoint Presentation, Case Study

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to register their name and email address on the Webex platform and receive an Attention Rating of 90% or higher in order to receive credits. The Attention Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.
