6/9/21 - Implementing Evidence-Based PTSD Practice: Practical Tips to Optimize Clinical Outcomes

Course Description:

This training will focus on the implementation of evidence-based practices for PTSD. Emphasis will be on reviewing available treatment options and the nuts and bolts of measurement-based care. The training will review practical tips on how to optimize delivery of PTSD evidence-based care. Common clinical considerations such as how to treat PTSD and co-occurring substance use and suicidal ideation will be reviewed. 

Learning Objectives:

1. List 2-3 PTSD symptoms and diagnostic considerations to inform/complete diagnostic assessment based on DSM 5 criteria.
2. Name 2-3 first-line treatment strategies and apply shared-decision making with their patients based on measurement based care guidance.
3. Describe treatment for patients with a diagnosis of PTSD and co-morbid substance use.
4. State how suicide risk monitoring and assessment is incorporated into evidence-based care for PTSD. Providers will be able to use suicide risk monitoring and assessment in their clinical care settings.
5. Explain components of measurement based care and how to collect and share measures to support clinical care and decisions. 
6. Identify how measurement based care can aid in treatment planning. Providers will be able to describe how they can use MBC to tailor ongoing care and inform the discharge process.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Erin Romero is the Program Manager for the Trauma Recovery and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Services at the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS), the VISN5 PTSD Mentor and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry University of Maryland School of Medicine.  She oversees provision of PTSD services at the Baltimore VA Hospital, Perry Point VA Hospital, and Community Outpatient Clinics. Dr. Romero also oversees the Veterans Integration into Academic  Leadership program. In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Romero provides direct clinical care to Veterans diagnosed with PTSD across the eras and participates in PTSD related research.  She has specialized training in evidence-based therapy for PTSD and is a Regional Trainer and Consultant for Cognitive Processing Therapy.  Dr. Romero has been affiliated with Veterans Affairs (VA) since 2008.  She  received her doctoral degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Psychology and undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.

Peter Allman, LCSW-C  is the Program Coordinator and Supervisory Social Worker for the Outpatient PTSD programs at the Perry Point VA Medical Center in Maryland.  Mr. Allman has been working with Veterans since 2005; his work has largely focused on the delivery of effective PTSD treatments. He brings over a decade of experience providing evidence based psychotherapy for PTSD.  Currently,  Mr. Allman coordinates the delivery of trauma focused treatments in the Perry Point PTSD outpatient program. Mr. Allman is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work, and completed his graduate training at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. 

Dr. Erin Romero, Peter Allman and the Planning Committee report that they have no relationships with commercial organizations to disclose. There will be no discussion of off label products.

Continuing Education:

American Psychological Association (APA) Credits - 5.5 hours

Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners Credits - 5.5 hours

National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Credits - 5.5 hours
"This course has been approved by CHEP as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider for 5.5 CEs. NAADAC provider number 62665, CHEP is responsible for all aspects of their programming."


National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Credits - 5.5 hours
Certified Counselors - National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): "Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6140.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC are clearly identified. Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to register their name and email address on the Webex platform and receive an Attention Rating of 90% or higher in order to receive credits. The Attention Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training.

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

VA VISN 5 Employee - $35

APA Certificate Fee - $10 additional to registration
