Translation and the Global Humanities 

This two-day symposium explores the many ways in which translation informs what we know and how we talk about the world around us. Featuring distinguished scholars from a broad range of disciplines, this symposium promises a lively discussion to which the whole University and Louisville communities are cordially invited.

The symposium will be structured around two keynote lectures: Professor Mary Louise Pratt’s keynote will be representative of the innovative ways in which translation is being studied within the Humanities; while Professor Esther Allen’s lecture will open a window on current practices of translation and the philosophy that inspires them.

Translation is not a mechanical process, but an act of creation.  To honor this essential aspect of the phenomenon, each day will feature a special event: the exhibit of the artwork by Ying Kit Chan, and the poetry reading by Kiki Petrosino. 

Attendance is free, registration is required.

Special Note: Esther Allen will present a keynote talk as part of a luncheon at the University Club. The keynote luncheon is free for UofL students, faculty and staff, please email janna@louisville.edu to reserve your meal.  For all other attendees, including community members and students and faculty from other institutions, there is a cost of $25.  For these attendees, reserving and paying for this luncheon is part of the registration process.
