 Rock Creek at Lower Leggett

Tennessee Valley Wild Ones members are invited to participate in a spring hike at Rock Creek at Lower Leggett, Sale Creek, TN with Stephan Eselgroth.

Hike details:

We will be hiking an out and back trail and a couple of creekside spur trails for 2-3 miles total to view early Spring flowers of the season. This is along the Rock Creek Connector Trail of the Cumberland trail.

This hike should provide us with a display of many different types of native plants including Dwarf Crested Iris, Yellow and other trillium, phlox, Wood sorrel, bluets, star chickweed, several violets, Yellow Trout lily, stonecrop, Doghobble, May apple, Wild geranium, Partridge berry, Pipsissewa, American holly, Carolina Allspice, maple l eaf viburnum, Crossvine and Jessamine. Eastern hemlock, a few pine, Rosebay rhododendron and Mtn Laurel provide an evergreen  backdrop.  Early leaves of Big-leaf and Umbrella magnolias, American Beech, Red, Striped and Sugar maples, and Sourwood should be there as well as blooms of Dogwood, Serviceberry and Painted buckeye, Paw Paw, Blueberry, Farkleberry and Deerberry.

There will be great opportunities for taking photos and seeing wildflowers, shrubs and trees in their native environment.  A few spots along the trail are moderately difficult and some slippery very rocky spots are present, a small/nearly still and shallow water crossing may be necessary and rock staircases are present.  Caution for those with impaired balance, especially after a rain.  There are areas where those who don't feel physically capable may want to hold back and view the area in more detail while others may want to tackle terrain to another creek spot.  The group will be notified about those areas.

Rating: Easy to Moderate
Distance: 2-3 + miles, approximately 3+ hours

Meet up will be at 10:00 EST at the Lower Leggett Rd trailhead.  A reminder and directions to the meeting location will be emailed to registrants in the week preceding the hike.
