 Wild Ones Members Only Hike
Shakerag Hollow with Dennis Horn

Tennessee Valley Wild Ones members are invited to participate in a spring hike at Shakerag Hollow Trail with Dennis Horn, Author/Naturalist and botanical guru.

Hike details:

We will be hiking an out and back trail with an abundance of Spring ephemerals and other wildflowers to view.  The hike location is within the University of the South-Sewanee Campus property (Domain) located about 1 hour from Chattanooga. The Shakerag Hollow/Perimeter Trail is a special destination for wildflower lovers.   We will start at Green's view and immediately climb down into the ‘hollow’ so we will be starting at and returning to via the brief but relatively steep set of stone steps; this part of the trail is the only section rated moderately strenuous.  Numerous scenic features include tall rock faces, caves, waterfalls, and mountain streams. The trail winds its way down a gradual decline and ascent through a continuous display of wildflowers. Among the many plants we should see include Trillium grandiflorum and T. sulcatum, trout lilies, ramps, Dutchman’s breeches, celandine poppy, dwarf larkspur, purple phacelia, and early saxifrage.  Midway through the hike, if we’re lucky, we may find the showy spotted mandarin (Prosartes maculate) with its creamy-white flowers dotted with maroon specks.  The sandstone escarpment often has halberd-leaf violet (V. hastate) and Sweet White violet (V. blanda), shrub yellowroot, wayward golf balls and shining club moss.

Rating: Easy to medium except as noted above
Distance: 2-3 + miles, approximately 3+ hours

Meet up will be at 10:00 EDT at the trailhead.  A reminder and directions to the meeting location will be emailed to registrants in the week preceding the hike.
