DESIGN LECTURE SERIES | BRIDGING CLEVELAND - MIGUEL ROSALES

AIA Cleveland welcomes famed bridge designer Miguel Rosales, president and principal designer of the Boston-based transportation architecture firm Rosales+Partners.  Miguel is an architect that has specialized in bridge aesthetics and architecture and urban design throughout his career. He has made it his mission to bring an artistic touch to the often prosaic business of designing bridges in the United States, specializing in elegant, eye-catching bone-thin structures.  Miguel will elaborate on the creative process for the four pedestrian bridges he has designed for the City of Cleveland, including the North Coast Harbor Bridge, the Wendy Park Pedestrian Bridge, the dramatic Lakefront Pedestrian Bridge connecting  downtown to Lakefront and the Case Western Reserve University S-shaped connector.

Learning Objectives:

1.  The proposed pedestrian and bicycle bridge connecting downtown Cleveland’s Malls to the Lakefront will be a signature bridge, a significant architectural gesture tying the initial Group Plan to key structures at the Lakefront.  Understand the implications of weaving a new structure into these two disparate sections of Cleveland.

2.  Grasp the structural design strategy of the Lakefront Bridge, including a steel main cable-stayed span over several railroad and highway lanes, railroads and Amtrak.  The entire length of the bridge including the ramp landing is approximately 1,200 linear feet with a 750’ main span and a single inclined V-shaped tower with a height of approximately 180’.

3.  Reflect on the potential impact and structural creativity accomplished by the dramatic and curvilinear, suspended pedestrian bridge proposed for the campus of CWRU.  It calls for a long, slender span with curving sections that would be supported by two inward-leaning diagonal masts anchored by cables.  The masts, in turn, would support a harp-like array of diagonal cables attached to the inboard side of each section of curving walkway.

4.  Understand the chosen geometry of the movable halves of the Harbor Bridge.  Rosales designed each half of the bridge as a curve, which should make the twin structures far more satisfying to watch in motion than a pair of straight, jackknife spans.
