HARD HAT TOUR:

The Edgewater Beach House

AIA Cleveland hosts a sneak preview hardhat tour of the nearly complete Edgewater Beach House, the Cleveland Metropark's iconic new lakefront public facility located at Edgewater Park on Cleveland's near west side waterfront. Designed by Bialosky Cleveland and built by construction manager A.M. Higley Co.,  the new, 14,638sf facility utilized a unique research and stakeholder engagement design process, provides new concessions, restrooms, staff support staffs, and a second level public open-air pavililion with a seasonal bar and fireplace along with extensive site work including a new pedestrian connector bridge. Located in an extreme micro-climate on the shores of Lake Erie, the Beach House employs best practices in resilient design principles informed by wind driven sand migration and wave-run up studies.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will explore the buidling design of the Edgewater Beach House from the prespectives of owner, architect, and construction manager. Attendees will understand the challenges of designing and building a new public facility on a high-visibility lakefront site.

2. Attendees will examine the construction systems, and how the unique lakefront micro-climate informed material selections and construction approaches.

3. Attendees will learn about the MEP, Structural and Technology building systems employed in the building. The project team will discuss the design and implementation of special architectural features including a green roof, cast-in-place double slab concrete systems, and a custom built cedar ceiling evocative of a wooden boat hull.

4.  The project team and attendees will discuss the design process, including site selection, programming, research, and analysis, all of which was informed through stakeholder engagement, while also considering the building's relationship to the the park, Lake Erie, and city.
