HARD HAT TOUR:

The Terminal Tower Residences

A special mid-construction hard-hat tour of the historic Cleveland landmark, Terminal Tower.  The construction of Terminal Tower above the Cleveland Union Terminal dates back to the 1920s.  Financed by state and federal historic tax credits, the developer is converting 10 floors into new apartments with office spaces in the top floors.  Faced with the challenge of navigating historic architecture with modern amenities, the design team generated about 60 different unit types due to waving corridors and existing conditions that are unique to each floor.

Learning Objectives:

  • Construction Manager will present how they are handling the challenging logistics of staging renovation construction in a historic building that is still partially open to the public.
  • Attendees will explore floor that are still under constuction as well as completed amenity levels.  They will be able to see how existing structure and services ar being handled throughout the renovation.
  • Attendees will examine the construction techniques that are required to maintain and protect existing building elements while undergoing a contemporary facelift.  They will be able to view original, historic details that have been restored to it's natural beauty.
  • After touring the building, attendees will discuss various code and design challenges when inserting a new, multifamily typology into an existing building that was initially designed for offices nearly 100 years ago.
