Lunch & Learn: Understanding Your Environmental Ethics

This program will embrace the AIA’s principles of livable communities that encourage mixed-use development, preserve urban centers, protect environmental resources and conserve landscapes by first comparing “concept-based” to “rule-based” ethics, then evaluating the most current AIA’s Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct (2018) regarding the environment, NCARB’s Rules of Conduct, and the National Society Professional Engineers’ Code of Ethics, with the American Society Landscape Architect’s Code of Environmental Ethics. Learning will include concepts such as the “Urban Growth Boundary” implemented in cities in Oregon, and an understanding of the changing professional practice models/delivery methods involving environmental ethical issues. Environmental conflicts will be discussed that impact an architect’s clients and the health safety and welfare of the public.

The program will then focus on ethical conflicts relating to the environment, and an examination of the AIA model agreements relating “Environmentally Responsible Design” in Design-Build, Integrated Project Delivery and Private-Public-Partnerships. Attendees’ learning in this program will apply to their services utilizing AIA model agreements relating to ERD, understanding that the traditional practice has challenges, and that environmental ethics in Design-Build, IPD and P3 require even greater diligence on behalf of an architect to protect the HSW of the public and architects’ clients.

This course is taught by Eric Pempus, FAIA, Esq., NCARB, Risk Manager from Design Pro Insurance Group, A Wichert Insurance Agency.

Learning Objectives

1)      Ethical Concepts & Rules: Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the similarities/differences between concept-based and rule-based ethics, and apply NCARB’s Rules of Conduct and the AIA’s 2017 Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct with the National Society of Professional Engineers’ Code of Ethics and the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Code of Environmental Ethics to their services for environmentally responsible design (ERD).

2)      Models & Delivery Methods: Upon completion, participants will be able to apply their learning and understanding to changing professional practice models and delivery methods, involving environmental ethical issues. The result will reveal potential environmental conflicts that impact an architect’s clients and the health safety and welfare of the public.

3)      Ethical Concerns & Violations: Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the often misunderstood landscape of environmental ethics and professional conduct that arise in unanticipated settings and circumstances, and to be able to recognize and explore areas of ethical violations relating to the environment with regard to their architectural practice.

 4)      Agreements, D-B, IPD, and P3: Upon completion, participants will be able to deliver their services utilizing AIA model agreements relating to ERD. Although traditional practice has challenges, environmental ethics in Design-Build, IPD and P3 require even greater diligence on behalf of an architect, and the tools learned in this program will assist in that regard.
