Post-COVID Practice: Remote Client Engagement

The crisis surrounding COVID-19 has thrown many of us into situations we normally wouldn’t entertain. The work we do as designers and creators of place, requires us to visit and engage to understand context and needs. With the limited ability to connect face-to-face and visit places, there’s much more reliance on virtual methods. Over the past seven months Guide Studiohas been forced to quickly innovate and adapt how they do their work without being physically present. While we all hope for the day when we can declare this pandemic over and resume our in-person meetings and site visits, the lessons Guide Studio has learned, and the innovations they have adopted during this time, have a place in our practice tool kit. In this presentation, Cathy Fromet will share how they researched, tested, fumbled and recovered their way through the use of virtual tools that have helped them continue to work with their place-based clients and partners.

Site Analysis & Programming always begin with some form of public/client engagement.  This is a critical step to help Architects understand concerns by community members and private users about safety, visibility, access, wayfinding, etc., The covid pandemic has cut Architects off from this in-person engagement. This talk will share tips and tools for Architects to find ways to re-engage with users to identify the Health, Safety and Welfare impacts of their Site Analysis & Programming.

Presented by Cathy Fromet from Guide Studio.

We would like to thank AIA Trust, Victor and CNA for sponsoring this event! Sponsored by Victor, the CNA Insurance Companies, and the AIA Trust, providers of the AIA Trust Professional Liability Insurance Program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Best practices to engaging your clients for both in-person and virtual meetings to discover and understand their concerns and insight that inform the project planning.
  • Case studies of projects that were impacted by the Covid Pandemic which disrupted the site analysis & programming, and how the team worked through it.
  • Tools you can use to aid the process of discovery and site analysis when you can't be there and how this can build efficiencies into your work once you can.
