Design Award Series: Transformation

Please join us for a new series, Design Awards: Transformation.Three recent recipients of the AIA Cleveland Design Awards will be featured in this first session of a lecture series in 2021 to promote design excellence around the theme of Transformation. These outstanding designs have widely different contextual settings and programmatic functions but they share a similar outcome of transformational impact.

Tri-C:

The reimagined Campus Center aspired to shed a harsh brutalist identity and become the central heart of the campus and community. Informed by widespread input, the building is now a beacon, with a glow seen from blocks away. It welcomes all.

Paul Taylor, AIA, is a Principal and prominent design leader at Bialosky who executes designs that make the complex simple. His reputation points to elegant, light-filled environments influenced by a love for art and a deep understanding of craft and sustainability.

BoxSpot:

Located in Cleveland’s Kinsman neighborhood, the design-build project undertaken with Burten Bell Carr Development and Scalish Construction is a retail incubator constructed of ten retrofitted shipping containers. Home to seven retail spaces, the building is arranged in a two story, U-shaped configuration and anchored by a sunken seating area for live performances. The intent was to balance the industrial nature of shipping containers and minimal detailing with light, material, color and playful landscape features that cater to the human experience.

Adam Rosekelly:

Adam is founder and Principal of Architecture Office and teaches design studio as adjunct professor at Kent State University's College of Architecture and Urban Design . His interests lie in the interplay of light, material, form and tectonics, studying how those fundamental elements can inform the built environment and transform human experience through perception driven design. His work engages community while challenging the profession through an iterative approach that studies the intersection of art and technology.

Process Technology:

Process Technology is a global manufacturer of heaters, coils, exchangers, and controls. The project mission was to commit to their community with the re-use of an existing property comprised of outdated, additive, utilitarian structures. As a result, the architecture is unified and reflective of the progressive technological identity of this forward-thinking company while sharing knowledge among staff and advancing innovative flexibility.

Learning Objectives:

Evaluate the three different existing conditions on the site and/or building so as to understand the constraints for improvements.

Explore the challenges and opportunities created by the building program and site constraints that impacted the building planning and any environmental benefits.

Compare the final building design solutions against the former conditions to consider the transformational impact to the users experience and their well being.

A brief question and answer session so that learners can inquire, with more detail, any specific aspects of the building design that they would like to discuss.
