Literature and Architecture
Three recent recipients of the AIA Cleveland Design Awards will be featured in this second session of a lecture series in 2021 to promote design excellence around the theme of "Designing for Literature". These outstanding designs, ranging from master planning to new construction, have widely different contextual settings with unique social and urban imapcts, but they share a similar outcome of sustainable and thoughtful spaces for appreciating literature and it's impacts on the environment and the community. |

Peter Bolek
Presenting the King Road Branch Library (Toledo-Lucas County Public Library)
As director of design and President of HBM Architects, Peter Bolek is the heart of the firm’s collaborative working model and takes an active role in both strategic and detailed design solutions in the studio. His passion lies in the belief that in addition to solving the complex and pragmatic needs of a client’s vision, design has the transformative power to enhance our everyday life experiences. In addition to quality design solutions, Peter endeavors to adapt each project appropriately to its community, function, and site. Using design charrettes, he works through a collaborative process with the firm’s clients resulting in completed projects that fit perfectly within their communities.
Rick Ortmeyer
Presenting the Mott Branch Library
Rick Ortmeyer is Principal and Architect of Bostwick Design Partnership. All of Rick’s 29 years of experience have been in service of public sector and institutional clients, providing a deep understanding of the responsibilities inherent to institutions supported through public and philanthropic funding. Rick’s career experience includes over 75 library planning and design projects, 40 of which with Bostwick Design Partnership since he joined the firm in 2002.
Ben Crabtree
Presenting the Cleveland Public Library Facilities Master Plan
Ben Crabtree, AIA, LEED AP is a Senior Associate at Bialosky Cleveland. He graduated with a Masters of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati and since has practiced in New York, Baltimore, and Cleveland. Influenced by his strong background in library and educational projects, Ben approaches architecture as a means to enrich communities and believes all good buildings should strive to do so. He has presented on library design and facility master plans for AIA Cleveland, the Cleveland Engineering Society, and in public community forums.
