Lunch & Learn: How the concept of well-being was integrated at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine

In this session, you will have an opportunity to understand how the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine changed the face of medical education by mirroring the values of osteopathic medicine to the delivery of a curriculum, and in the process affected the design and construction of their new home. From the selection of the design team, the selection of the construction manager, and changing curriculum during the building planning process, see how everyone on the team became champions for supporting wellness. Understand how the Owner's values were reflected in the operation of the design and construction team and how the building became a beacon for wellness in Ohio during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will understand how the College, in the midst of redesigning their curriculum to be more "wellness" focus, affected the design of the building in the middle of a global pandemic. This change was implemented to encourage more social interation between peers in the building but also to include opportunitiets for focus on emotional and physical health of each student in the program.
  • Attendees will learn to evaluate ideas of building occupant wellness and translate them to building design features. Features in the building that included stimulating health and wellness was the integration of a student and faculty gym, meditation studio, and yoga room. Also, natural daylight was brought throughout the building by means of floor to ceiling glazing and a large open, 3-story atrium with a glass roof.
  • Attendees will learn methods of developing a team-centered focus of support that leads to positive construction outcomes. The team was able to accomplish this development through the pandemic by making sure that safety and health protocols were in place for workers, making sure everyone was evaluated daily for health checks, and making sure that the mental health of all workers was observed during times of high stress at the onset of the pandemic when there was an overflow of messaging coming out of the federal and state government.
  • Attendees will learn how the early integration of the design and construction team into the Owner's project process yields benefit over the life of the project. The Dean invited the design team and CM to participate in a college-wide seminar that brought together college leadership, faculty, and students in dialogue around the vision and goals for revamping the curriculum. The seminar became a reference that guided the cycle of cost reconciliation throughout design and remained foundational in how we worked as a team through constuction.
