He/She/They/Hir/Ze: Navigating Transgender in the Workplace

This Meeting will deliver an enlightening discussion of gender identity and transgender issues impacting today’s workplace that our Attendees might someday face in their own companies.  Attendees will hear first-hand experience from Kye Allums, the first black openly transgender person in the sports industry.  Attorney Michelle Phillips will review how companies can support transgender individuals from legal and professional perspectives.

Attendees will:

  • Develop an understanding/overview of gender discrimination laws and terminology as it affects hiring and employee relations issues in the workplace.
  • Listen to a first-hand case study from a transgender athlete whose personal identity led to a life changing decision and how it was received by friends, family and colleagues.
  • Receive recommendations from a legal perspective on how to prepare for on-the-job transitions to ensure an inclusive and non-discriminatory workplace.

Presenters:  Kye Allums is an LGBTQ advocate, athlete, artist, healer, coach, and a queer fluid transgender person of color.  In 2010, they became the first black openly transgender person in sports history, and the first Division I openly transgender athlete in NCAA history.

Michelle E. Phillips is a Principal in the White Plains office of Jackson Lewis P.C.  Ms. Phillips is a member of the firm's Diversity Committee. Ms. Phillips handles various types of employment litigation with an emphasis on sexual and racial harassment and LGBT matters.
