"Assessing Children by Using a Developmentally-friendly Process that Includes Play Therapy and Expressive Activities (EPBDA)"
Description: This workshop will demonstrate and teach a play-based assessment model for young children or non-verbal youth, or children who are loathe to use verbal communication for whatever reason. The assessment utilizes expressive therapies, including art, sand, and play therapy and this workshop will allow play therapists to better understand how expressive techniques can be utilized as a foundation for commenting on children’s overall functioning. Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to “read” art, sand, and play themes, and how to communicate those in a way that they support the recommendations that are being made. Please plan to spend time working in groups to sharpen your play therapy assessment skills as well as your verbal or written communication skills. Learner Objectives:Basic information will be provided as well as ample resources that will augment and support the presentation. 1. Define this assessment model 2. List three activities that are included in this assessment model 3. Provide a rationale for utilizing expressive therapies in this play-based assessment model 4. List two cautions to be used when commenting on art and/or sand therapy products 5. Name the basic play therapy approach that underlies this model 6. Name the overall goal of this developmental, play-based assessment

"Helpful Interventions for Play Therapy Clients Who are Victims of Domestic Violence"
Description: Play therapists are mandated reporters who need to have an up to date understanding of the incidence of domestic violence in our society as well as of the reporting requirements and interventions which are helpful in treating children and families who are experiencing domestic violence. This three-hour workshop meets the requirements of the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health
Counseling. Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop participants will:1) increase their understanding of what constitutes domestic violence in a family; 2) review the incidence of domestic violence in our society in order to increase their understanding of the scope
of this problem; 3) learn how to conduct family assessments in order to identify victims and perpetrators of domestic violence;
and 4) discuss treatment interventions which are helpful in treating victims and their families.
"Play Therapist Self-Care Using Mindfulness-Based Practices"
Description: During this three-hour presentation Play Therapists will be reminded of the importance of self-care in managing stress, preventing compassion fatigue and burnout, and maintaining a high level of professional effectiveness. Participants will learn and practice mindfulness-based practices which can be easily incorporated into their daily self-care routines in order to more effectively manage stress, increase concentration and "presence" during sessions, deepen awareness and
compassion, and greatly improve a Play Therapist's overall sense of wellbeing and confidence.
Learner Objectives: 1) Participants will identify risk factors which expose Play Therapists to high levels of stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout; 2) Participants will review signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and burnout syndrome, and the importance of incorporating daily self-care practices into their routines; 3) Participants will be introduced to mindfulness as an evidenced-based self-care practice which will not only help them to manage stress, prevent compassion fatigue and burnout, but also increase concentration, "Presence", awareness and compassion, as well as increase a Play Therapist's effectiveness and overall sense of wellbeing and confidence.
