In 2023 the Clergy Professional Development Day features a workshop led by The Samaritans of Boston, whose mission it is to reduce the incidence of suicide by alleviating despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among individuals in the community, 24 hours a day; to educate the public about suicide prevention; to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide.

Community connectedness has a role to play in reducing stigmas associated with suicide and mental illness, stigmas which inhibit people from discussing their feelings and challenges. This connectedness is especially important during and emerging from seasons of isolation like the COVID-19 pandemic, and also during the increasingly uncertain climate of our planet and for our species.

During the workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Ask directly about suicidal intent and how to best support those in crisis;
  • Recognize warning signs and risk factors of suicide and find resources to help yourself or a loved one;
  • How to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and
  • Manage stress and develop effective coping skills through discussion, safety planning, and self-care.

All clergy are encouraged to take advantage of the workshop. Clergy due for a Safe Church refresher in 2023 should attend both the workshop and the review segment. You may choose to attend the segments in any order and in any combination.

Most clergy who are canonically resident or licensed to officiate in the Diocese of Massachusetts are required to attend a Clergy Professional Development Day every three years in order to maintain good standing (see the document here explaining required attendance and exemptions).  Also, every three years, clergy will be required to complete online training via Praesidium Academy (if you do not have an account, contact the safe church administrator at your church or, if non-parochial or retired, Jennifer Garrett at jgarrett@diomass.org), and authorize our diocese to conduct a nationwide public records check.

Those who register for virtual segments will receive detailed information to join by zoom in a reminder email at least 12 hours prior to the meeting. In person attendees will be offered lunch between 12-1pm.

Please contact Martha Gardner, at mgardner@diomass.org or 617.482.4826 x403 if you have any questions.
