Course Abstract
This course provides engineers with knowledge about the fundamentals and a framework for developing effective leadership in the engineers' professional practice. Understanding the S-triangle in leadership development, evaluation of personal behaviors and core principles, leadership characteristics and roles, case studies of leadership situations, and self-reflection activities form the basis of the course activities and learning materials. The learner should develop skills that will allow them to integrate their leadership capabilities and help prepare them for their next leadership opportunity.

What Engineers Will Learn

  • Differentiate between leadership and management.
  • Learn the fundamentals of leadership, characteristics, and roles of a leader, and the skills needed to become a sustained and effective leader.
  • Learn lessons of leadership.
  • Case studies of leadership.
  • Reflection.
  • Applying leadership principles to your particular situation (as chosen by you).
  • Improve personal leadership capabilities using reflection.

Presenter Biography
David Bayless Ph.D., P.E., is the Gerald Loehr Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of the Robe Leadership Institute at Ohio University. He is also the director of the Ohio Coal Research Center, part of Ohio University’s Center of Excellence in Energy and the Environment. Dr. Bayless formerly worked for American Electric Power (Gavin and Amos Plants) and was an officer in the United States Navy. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was the technical administrator of the State of Ohio’s Coal Research Consortium, funded by the Ohio Coal Development Office, from 2000-2007. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri and Ohio, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the National Academy of Inventors. And he has twice won the Russ College of Engineering’s Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. He has been principal investigator for over $18 million in externally funded research, holds several patents with revenue generating licenses, and over 60 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of pollution control and energy conversions. Dr. Bayless is also actively engaged in teaching and developing leadership skills for engineers as director of the Robe Leadership Institute in the Russ College. He is the founding director of the American Society of Engineering Education’s Engineering Leadership Development Division.

You must respond appropriately, or you will not be eligible for a CPD Certificate of Completion.

Continuing Professional Development Hours
OSPE programs are designed to meet the requirements for Ohio’s continuing professional development (CPD) law and State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors (State Board of Registration) rules.  For Ohio licensees, the State Board of Registration determines the acceptance of individual courses for CPD credit. The State Board of Registration does not preapprove any courses or course providers.  OSPE programs are also designed to comply with the law in KY, NC and WV.  Be sure to consult those states’ licensing authorities. This program also meets CPD requirements in many additional states.  There is 1.0 CPD hour associated with this program. Professionals should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Throughout the program, be sure to respond appropriately to our attendance monitoring device so that your attendance may be verified in case you are audited by the State.

Deductibility of Registration Fee
Registration fees for this program are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.  However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses.  Please consult your tax advisor.
