Webinar – 1.0 CPD Hour

Course Abstract
This is a two-part webinar series and the learner can take one or both webinars.

The Flint, Michigan crisis is still ongoing, and the experiences could implicate thousands of other water systems in the United States. Through this two-part webinar series, participants will examine the Flint, Michigan water crisis as a case study to discover the pulbic policy and ethical issues raised for engineers, and gain a better understanding of how to engage, respond and use the insights learned.  Participants will be shown the environmental and engineering issues, the challenges, and the choices made in a professional context and how these factors are integrated with public policy, health and socio-economic outcomes at the local, state and federal levels.  The webinar series will also cover the choices made with regulatory compliance, chemical treatment, corrosion management, cost management and water sourcing.

What Engineers Will Learn in Part 1:

• To think through and analyze and understand and apply responses to ethical challenges for engineering in the 21st century as gatekeepers and service providers to others
• The lessons learned since 2015 which focus on: poor water quality choices and management practices, public health interface and coordination, the roles and leadership of women, weaknesses in political governance and legal system reliance that create risk management issues for engineers

Engineers are encouraged to also enroll in part 2 to continue their education on this subject.

Presenter Biography
Michael J. Zimmer is executive in residence and senior fellow at the Russ College of Engineering and Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs at Ohio University (Athens, Ohio) since 2007. He has worked as a practicing attorney in the corporate and trade association world, and retired from almost 35 years in private law practice in 2013. He has represented Fortune 500 companies, communities and developing companies on energy, environmental, finance and technology development issues since 1980. He has testified before the U.S. Congress, and federal and state departments and agencies, authored numerous articles, and has been an outside executive editor on several new books on climate change law, environmental ethics and public – private partnerships.

During this webinar, we'll be monitoring your attendance so that we are in compliance with the requirements of the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.  While this webinar is available "on demand," your participation will be monitored through a device that will require your response at various intervals. You must respond appropriately, or you will not be eligible for a CPD Certificate of Completion.

Continuing Professional Development Hours
OSPE programs are designed to meet the requirements for Ohio’s continuing professional development (CPD) law and State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors (State Board of Registration) rules.  For Ohio licensees, the State Board of Registration determines the acceptance of individual courses for CPD credit. The State Board of Registration does not preapprove any courses or course providers.  OSPE programs are also designed to comply with the law in KY, NC and WV.  Be sure to consult those states’ licensing authorities. This program also meets CPD requirements in many additional states.  There is 1.0 CPD hour associated with this program. Professionals should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Throughout the program, be sure to respond appropriately to our attendance monitoring device so that your attendance may be verified in case you are audited by the State.
