Introduction to Humanitarian Logistics

Webinar – 1.0 CPD Hour


Course Abstract
The course of Introduction to Humanitarian Logistics explores the challenges of responding to disasters and catastrophes. The course covers: (1) the fundamentals of the cycle of emergency management with special emphasis on the differences between disasters and catastrophes, (2) key lessons from fieldwork research from engineering and social sciences, and (3) case studies of events that have shaped the field in the Unites States (Hurricane Katrina) and abroad (Japan Cascading Disasters).  

What Engineers Will Learn

  • To identify the most salient characteristics of humanitarian logistics, disaster response logistics and the cycle of emergency management,
  • To describe fundamental differences between emergencies, disasters and catastrophes
  • To identify the most salient challenges of recent disasters, in particular Hurricane Katrina and the 2011 Japan Cascading Disasters

This course incorporates key lessons from recent applied and fieldwork research, and it gives a broad perspective of humanitarian and disaster response logistics.

Presenter Biography

Dr. Felipe Aros-Vera is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Ohio University. Dr. Aros-Vera holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and a M.S. and B.S. on Engineering Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His research spans the fields of Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Logistics, Transportation and Urban Logistics. His expertise includes the application of operations research, mathematical optimization, and computer programming techniques to solve complex problems. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR), Journal of Operations Management (JOM), and Transportation Research Part B: Methodological. Dr. Aros-Vera has participated in several research and applied research projects including: Park and Ride Facility Location in New York City, Integrative Freight Demand Management in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and Cyber Enabled Discovery System for Advanced Multidisciplinary Study of Humanitarian Logistics for Disaster Response. Most recently, Dr. Aros-Vera conducted fieldwork research after the 2016 Ecuador Earthquake and 2017 Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

You must respond appropriately, or you will not be eligible for a CPD Certificate of Completion.

Continuing Professional Development Hours
OSPE programs are designed to meet the requirements for Ohio’s continuing professional development (CPD) law and State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors (State Board of Registration) rules.  For Ohio licensees, the State Board of Registration determines the acceptance of individual courses for CPD credit. The State Board of Registration does not preapprove any courses or course providers.  OSPE programs are also designed to comply with the laws in KY, NC and WV.  Be sure to consult those states' licensing authorities.  The program also meets CPD requirements in many additional states.  There is 1.0 CPD hour associated with this program. Professionals should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Throughout the program, be sure to respond appropriately to our attendance monitoring device so that your attendance may be verified in case you are audited by the State.

Deductibility of Registration Fee
Registration fees for this program are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.  However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses.  Please consult your tax advisor.
