Boundaries that Heal : Limit-Setting in Play Therapy

Boundaries are the cornerstone of an effective and ethical play therapy practice, but also a stumbling block for so many providers.  How does a clinician maintain boundaries while also nurturing authentic relationships with play therapy clients?  When, how and why should a clinician set boundaries during play therapy sessions?

This live webinar will examine the role of boundaries both in and out of the counseling session.  Participants will re-ignite their values around this imprtant work while becoming more equipped to facilitate ethical and effective treatment of their play therapy clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how practicing within identified values improves clinical practice of play therapy.
  • Apply the concept of "living B-I-G" to your play therapy practice.
  • Explain how proper application of boundaries decreases risk of burn-out as a play therapist.
  • Compare the differences between boundary crossings and boundary violations that are often the subject of play therapy cases.
  • Describe how to locate APT's "Paper on touch" and its relevance to play therapy cases.
  • Compare the use of limits from 3 different play therapy theories
  • Demonstrate at least 5 play therapy interventions designed to reach or facilitate boundaries with play therapy clients.

Day 2:

Sensory-Informed Play Therapy

Child playing with colored rice. Baby s sensory experiences

Children with Sensory integration concerns have a difficult time making sense of their world.  Layer this on top of mental health concerns and it can be overwhelming for everyone involved in the play therapy process.  Thankfully, as our understanding of the nervous system develops, so does the potential for effective play therapy intervention.  This course was developed in consultation with a Pediatric Occupational Therapist.  Course content and activities have been designed to increase your confidence to both recognize sensory issues in your clients and design sensory-informed play therapy interventions.

  Learning Objectives:

  • Compare differences and similarities between occupational therapy and play therapy.
  • List the 7 sensory systems involved with sensory integration during play therapy.
  • Explain play behaviors that may be negatively impacted by sensory system impairment.
  • Identify behavior manifesting during a play therapy session that indicate an occupational therapy referral may be appropriate.
  • Design a sensory-friendly play therapy office and/or telemed environment.
  • Demonstrate at least 5 sensory-informed play therapy interventions.
