Ryan Dowd, The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness This session is offered twice: both at 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and again from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Ryan Dowd runs the second-largest homeless shelter in Illinois, is author of the ALA book, “The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness,” and trains organizations around the world. Rural, urban, and suburban homelessness is an increasingly visible trend accross Kentucky, challenging both communities and library staff members. This pre-conference will teach how to compassionately, confidently, and effectively address problematic behavior from patrons experiencing homelessness, mental illness, addiction or trauma. Trustees, Directors, and those attending the youth services pre-conference are all encouraged to attend either the morning or afternoon session of Mr. Dowd's workshop.
Trustee Forum: All the Things You Wish You Knew Before Becoming a Library Trustee This session is from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Meet other trustees from around the state and engage in a facilitated discussion of topics including: director evaluation, advocacy, intellectual freedom challenges, budgeting best practices, what should really go in the minutes, trustee/director roles and responsibilities, and more.
What the hell is connected learning?: Transforming Youth Services
This session is from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Presenters: Krista King-Oaks (Boone County Public Library), Veronica Rainwater (Warren County Public Library), and Tracy Thomas (Louisville Free Public Library) How did you feel about school? Who were your friends? What were your dreams for the future? Asking yourself these questions is the first practical step towards a new model of working with youth in your community known as "connected learning". Participants in this workshop will learn how to build inclusive youth programming that focuses on equitable library services for children and teens to reach the "unreachable".
Directors' Forum: The LISTSERV Goes Live
This session is from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
Ever wish we had a chance to talk through issues a little more thoroughly than we can on the directors’ listserv? Now is your chance! Join us as we discuss the burning issues in our libraries. We will facilitate discussions on advocacy, HR intricacies, security options, management styles and legal issues. Seasoned directors and the newly annointed are all encouraged to attend. This is your opportunity to add to and benefit from the collective wisdom of library directors.
