Introduction
With excitement, the Interlake Regional Health Authority, along with our community partners, Healthy Living Youth and Seniors and the Interlake Municipal Recreation Association, are planning our second annual Healthy Living – The Power of Prevention conference. This event will be on April 7th and 8th of 2011. The conference will be held in picturesque Gimli. We are excited about the many workshops, dynamic speakers, and presentations that will take place during these two days. This will be an outstanding event for anyone involved in health, recreation, community development, education, early childhood educators, volunteers and municipal government.
The focus of this year’s conference is putting words into action. We know what the problems are, now we want to work together to address these common issues and provide the best resources to everyone. This conference will highlight the importance that prevention initiatives and health promotion activities play in reducing the burden of chronic disease and preventing further complications.
The early bird cost of the conference, including dinner is $125.00. Tickets purchased after April 1, 2011 will be $150.00.

Key Note Speakers
Dr. Ali Zentner from CBC's "Village on a Diet"
Dr. Ali Zentner walks the talk of maintaining an active lifestyle. Since she first stepped on the elliptical machine 10 years ago, Ali has lost 160 pounds. Ali is a passionate speaker in the field of disease prevention and believes that lifestyle modification can be just as important of a tool as medication — or even more so—in reversing the risk of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Ali completed her undergraduate medical degree at McMaster University, then her Internal Medicine Residency with an extra year of Cardiology training at the University of Calgary. Ali practiced Internal Medicine in Southern Alberta for five years, with a particular focus on Cardiovascular Risk Stratification and Metabolic Syndrome. In Lethbridge, Alberta, she became Director of the Chinook Region Heart Failure Clinic and the Southern Alberta Obesity Clinic. She went on to establish the largest multidisciplinary obesity clinic in Southern Alberta and continues to work in the region as a consultant in obesity medicine. Since 2005, Ali has been practicing in West Vancouver as a specialist in Cardiac Risk Management and Obesity, and recently began a fellowship at St. Paul's Hospital with a focus on the treatment of patients with Metabolic Syndrome.
She lives in Vancouver with her husband of 13 years — happy years, thanks to his silence about the size of her shoe collection.
Doreen Fey, Interlake RHA - Vice President of Planning
We have all heard the reports of how alarming the chronic disease rates are, but there are ways to reduce the three risk factors, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity, which impact the health care costs. The Regional Report, Cost of Chronic Disease in the Interlake, will highlight what chronic disease costs are in our communities.
Doreen Fey is the Vice President of Planning with the Interlake Regional Health Authority. She has led many key initiatives such as capital planning for the Selkirk & District General Hospital, overseeing construction of the dialysis unit in Gimli Hospital as well as the construction of the East St. Paul EMS station. Doreen sits on many provinical committees such as Partners in Planning as well, she sits on the Board of Directors for Canadian Cancer Society. Doreen is also a surveyor with Accreditation Canada and has been involved in surveys across the country. Doreen has a passion for health promotion and disease prevention initiatives and she initiated the development of the IRHA Community Wellness Program.
Healthy Together Now - Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative Success Stories
All over the province, ordinary Manitobans have worked together to get more active, eat healthier food, decide on smoke free living and learn more about mental wellbeing.
Healthy Together Now, first called the Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative (CDPI), is a project that has been active in the Interlake Region. Key features of the initiative are that it is community led, regionally coordinated, and government supported.
The Interlake has four groups participating in Healthy Together Now: City of Selkirk, Arborg & Riverton, Eriksdale & Lundar, and Little Saskatchewan First Nation. Each group will highlight some successes and talk about their programs.
Panel Moderator and Facilitator - Dr. Dexter Harvey
Learn how others have made positive change in their communities. A panel of speakers from a variety of backgrounds from around the province will be sharing what worked for them and the ripple effect beyond their projects.
Dr. Dexter Harvey will summarize the presentations, link common threads and highlight the important points. The goal of this session is to send delegates home motivated to implement the programs and be the change agent in their communities.
During his academic career, Dr. Harvey became engaged in the realm of policy and practice in Manitoba. He catalyzed Canada’s first provincial Alliance for the Prevention of Chronic Disease, and was its first volunteer Director. Next, he became Founder and Director (volunteer) of the Canadian Cancer Society’s innovative Knowledge Exchange Network, then led the formation of the Partners in Planning for Healthy Living Coalition in Manitoba, which enables local data collection to support public health planning and evaluation in all health regions. His personal leadership has advanced many initiatives at the national as well as provincial levels.
Conference MC - Kate Ferris
A Manitoba-born songwriter, storyteller, and music educator, Kate has toured Canada and the U.S. with numerous groups, including the dynamic 3-woman touring group Canadian Content Theatre Co.; good-time Celtic balladeers The Blarney Band; medicine-show gypsies The Critter Family; those cowpoke crooners, The Rodeo Riders; ‘ukulele ladies duo Hot Flash (with Judy Cook); and SMALL ROOMS - a folk trio that gained national attention for their witty yet thoughtful lyrics and intricate harmonies.
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Kate brings her stories and songs to life for audiences from coast to coast, often adding guitar, ukulele, banjo, keyboards and more. Her appearances at festivals and concerts have never failed to delight listeners of all ages. Kate’s vocal and instrumental skills have contributed dynamism and musical depth to various recordings and national radio and television programs.
Kate has lead workshops on both songwriting and storytelling, has appeared in over 100 schools as part of Manitoba’s “Artists In The Schools” residency program (where she presents “GET ANIMATED!
